'Ring! Ring!' Mekaila quickly answers her phone.
"Hey Codie, how are you?" She asks.
"Hey, I'm feeling a bit better, it's just my legs are killing me and I don't know why." Codie sighs.
"Aww, I'm so sorry, I hope you feel better soon. Everyone at school missed you, especially Parker."
"Yeah, I missed you all too. I hope I get better real soon."
"Me too, it isn't the same without you there." Mekaila is excited for a party.
"Yeah, I can't wait to see you guys again."
"Well, I'll let you get some rest. Just figured I better check in on you." Mekaila sighs.
"Okay, thank you. Bye."
"Bye." Mekaila strokes Cowgirl's fur, hoping that Codie will get better soon.
Her aunt walks in, followed by Country, who goes into a play bow, begging Cowgirl to play with. Cowgirl goes into a play bow, Country runs out of the room, and Cowgirl runs after her, chasing and barking.
"Hi, I heard what's going on. I know it's hard, but your friend will pull through." Her aunt tells her.
"I know, I just worry, that's all." Mekaila sighs.
"Just like your mama, she was always a worrier, too."
"Uh-huh."
"Want some dinner?"
"No, I'm not hungry. Maybe later, but thanks." Mekaila lays down on her bed.
"Alright, let me know if I can do anything."
"Thanks."

There's a light knock on Codie's door, startling Buddy, who starts barking.
"Come in!" Codie calls, as she calms Buddy down.
"Got a little watchdog there, huh?" Chris asks, coming in, with a tray of fruit, cheeses, meats, and crackers, "hungry?"
"Sure am! Looks yummy!" Codie sits up in bed.
Chris sets the tray down on her bed and sits across from her, "mind if I join you?"
"Of course not, I can't eat all this by myself, silly." Codie grabs a cracker and puts a slice of meat on it.
"I know you're probably bored, so I got you something." Chris reaches in a bag he brought with him and pulls out a coloring book and markers.
"Awesome! Thanks, Chris!" Codie gives her brother a big hug.
"Hopefully, it'll help to take your mind off things." He smiles at her.
Just then, the doorbell rings, making Buddy bark some more. Chris gets up, "gotta get that, mom and dad are both gone."
He rushes down the stairs, right as the doorbell is rung again. He opens it and sees Parker standing there.
"Sorry 'bout that, was upstairs with Codie. How's it going?" Chris acts kind of serious.
"Oh, how is she? She's had me worried for quite a while." Parker has a concerned look on his face.
"She's doing a little better, but her legs are still hurting her. You wanna come in and see her?"
"I'd love to, but I don't like to see people not feeling well and I gotta get going. But this is for her." He pulls out a stuffed dog from behind his back and hands it to Chris.
"She's going to love this, I'll make sure she gets it right away." Chris smiles.
"Thanks, man. See ya later!" Parker heads back to his car, Chris waves at him and closes the door.

"Woof! Woof!" Cowgirl wakes Mekaila up with her barking, that night.
"What is it, girl?" Mekaila asks, sleepily.
"Woof!" She scratches at the door.
"Alright, alright." Mekaila gets out of bed, puts her slippers on, and opens the door.
Cowgirl dashes out into the living room, through the kitchen, and to the front door, barking madly. Then, Mekaila hears a smashing noise, like someone is trying to break in. She hears Country bark, too, and then sees her dash to the front door. Her aunt appears, whispering to Mekaila to stay quiet. Mekaila sees she has her pistol and remains quiet. She manages to get the dogs away from the front door and locks them in her room, quietly. The front door flies open and Mekaila hears her aunt yell 'freeze'.
Mekaila peeks out from the hallway, and sees a man standing in the doorway. Her aunt has her pistol pointed at him, "what do you want?"
"Woah, easy ma'am, I'm just looking for a place to stay." He has a country-kind of accent.
"Then, why not go to a hotel?" Her aunt demands, "you scared my niece and I half to death."
Mekaila notices the guy has a rifle, but her aunt doesn't. Mekaila comes into the living room, but her aunt tells her to stay back. Right as her aunt is looking at her, the man lifts his rifle, ready to shoot, Mekaila yells, "no!"
The dogs break out of the bedroom and Country leaps in front of Mekaila's aunt, separating her and the man, taking the bullet, right as the man shoots. Mekaila's aunt screams and shoots at the man, missing him, but making him run off into the night.
"Country!" Mekaila runs over and bends down to her side.
"I'm calling the vet right away." Mekaila's aunt grabs her phone.
They load Country into her truck right away and head over to the vet's. On the way, Mekaila puts a towel on Country's hind leg, where she's bleeding, and puts pressure on it to help stop the bleeding. They arrive at the vet clinic within ten minutes. They carry Country in right away and the vet admits her and takes her back. He decides to do a couple X-rays of the leg, to see if the bullet is still in her. He returns back a few minutes later with the X-rays. He puts them up on the light, showing that the bullet is in her leg. He recommends putting her under anesthesia to remove the bullet immediately. Mekaila and her aunt agree and sign the paperwork to leave Country there until later.
"Thank you so much, doctor." Mekaila's aunt hugs him as they leave.
"You're welcome, I'll call you in the morning."
They head home, relieved that Country is still alive, for the time being.
A/N: Wow! What a chapter! What do you guys think? Is Country going to survive surgery? Let me know what you think, thanks!
