Chapter 10

*Alyssa's POV*

If stress was my trigger, you'd think I'd be dead with the headaches. But I guess I was disappointed, not stressed out. Why had Jack agreed to work for him? He wasn't scared of Pitch, he wasn't scared of anything that I knew of. But I guess Pitch did know, that's how he was able to coerce him.

"I'm sorry, Alyssa." Tracy said.

"I'm just confused. What could Pitch possibly have said to convince him?"

She sat on the bench with me. "I saw it in his eyes when he was here, he really cares about you. Maybe Pitch threatened you."

I scoffed. "Jack knows that he couldn't do anything to me. If I got angry with Pitch, I'd just freeze him and leave."

"You're too independent for your own good."

"Is that a bad thing?"

She shrugged. "Everyone needs someone. For me, it's Moser." I felt my heart drop. "He's like my brother. Without him, I wouldn't have anything. I'd go crazy. Kariss visits, but if I was constantly alone..." I felt better, she just loved him as a brother. Why did I care? It's not like that would affect my life one way or another.

I nodded. "I act like I don't need him and a lot of the time I think I don't, but you're right." I chuckled. "Maybe Jack just saw that before I did."

"Why do you think he did it?"

"I have no idea." I rubbed my eyes tiredly, though I wasn't. "I need to get to the Pole though."

She nodded. "I'll tell Moser so that he isn't worrying about you."

"Thanks."

I flew out the door and up north. By the time I got there, I was missing Jack like crazy.

"Jack?" Tooth called as I flew past the hall.

"No, sorry." I sighed.

"Do you know where he went? He told us he was going to talk to you about five hours ago."

I nodded. "Can you get everyone together before I tell you?"

I walked slowly to the main room, Tooth flying ahead of me to call everyone together.

I leaned against the rail between me and the globe and sighed again. Why? Just as I figure everything out and become used to my life?

Everyone came in eventually and urged me to tell them what happened. "Jack is working for Pitch."

My announcement was met with blank stares and open mouths. Bunny said, "I thought you said you knew."

"It sounds ridiculous, I know. But Pitch came to me earlier today and told me. Jack's an idiot." I glanced around a corner after saying that, afraid he'd pop out of nowhere.

"He lies often." Tooth said softly. I saw Sandy staring at me in shock, but not the same shock that I saw on the others' faces. I wondered what was on his mind.

"I know he does, and I didn't believe him either, but then Jack showed up." I rubbed my arm uncomfortably. He looked so cold, it scared me. He scared me more than Pitch did.

"And he told you?" North asked.

I shook my head. "He didn't say anything."

"Then how do you know?"

My lowered eyes raised to theirs. "He had Pitch's yellow eyes, and his hair was black. It was scary to even see him. He looked almost dead inside."
