~October 19, 2022~

The morning started off like any other- England decided to live up to its typical grey skies, the rain gently hitting the roof of the small chapel. The ceremony was about to begin and people found their way to their seats. Soft classical music played in the background as families greeted each other and sat together, friends laughed, and the air filled with excitement. Today was the day they were finally getting married.

Dan sat alone in his room next to Phil's, leaning on the wall and hoping to hear something from the other side. His younger brother walked over and sat down next to him.

"You nervous?" He asked, trying to figure out what was going on in Dan's mind.

Dan gave a soft smile, shaking his head. "Not at all. I've been waiting for this day for years."

"Then why do you look like an old man reflecting on your life. This is your wedding day!" the younger boy added, elbowing his older brother lightly.

"I guess that's what I am doing. Phil's been such a big part of my life since 2009. I'm just thinking about all we've been through together. Thirteen years is a long time."

"Thirteen years exactly. I still can't believe you guys chose to get married the same date that you met for the first time."

"Not just the date, we timed it out so we say 'I do' the same minute we first hugged thirteen years ago. It's ridiculous, I know, but it's also so... Us. I can't explain it, really, but I knew in that moment at the train station that I was going to marry him. And now, it's finally happening."

His little brother put his arm around Dan, pulling him into a hug. "Then what are you waiting for. Let's go get you married."

In the next room over, Phil was having a similar conversation with his older brother Martyn. "You know, we planned this so that the minute we say 'I do' will be the same minute that we hugged that first time at the train station back in 2009. I remember that moment perfectly, and I wouldn't change a single thing. He was so small and awkward, and I just remember seeing him and I felt this protective feeling in my chest, and I knew I never wanted anyone to hurt him. I remember hugging him and everything fell into place, as if we were destined to meet. But the thing I remember the most about that day was taking him home and just hanging out. It was the first time we had ever met in person, but I never felt awkward. We talked all night, cuddled against each other in bed, taking about everything and nothing, and I knew in that moment that I loved him. And if you would have told me then that I would be marrying him thirteen years later, the only thing I would protest would be how long of a wait it would be."

"Speaking of which, why did make you guys wait so long? I mean, you guys could have gotten married years ago and had a shorter engagement and everything."

Phil chuckled, thinking back to a time in 2013 when a drunken deal was made in front of a few friends and an entire bar. He and Dan had gotten back together a few month before after a bumpy patch and a small break up a year or so prior. But that night, they were as cute as they were the first time they started dating. After one too many drinks, Dan stood up, quieted the whole bar, and shouted "Philip Michael Lester. I love you, I really do, and nothing could ever change that. Now, I'm a little too plastered now, but if you would agree, I would love to marry you in 2022." The bar erupted into cheers as Phil said yes. When they woke up hungover the next morning, the fuzzy memory came rushing back. "So are we like, engaged now or something?" Dan asked. "I don't think so," Phil recalled, "but at the same time, we did agree to get married. But why on earth did you pick a year so far away?" Dan shrugged, said he liked the year, and suggested they get something to help their hangovers. By the end of the day, they decided that the "engagement" that happened the night prior was just a "pre-proposal," or a practice one. They kept dating for a few more years until Phil finally popped the actual question over a fancy dinner.

As the time for the ceremony got closer, Dan and Phil were moved into position. They were doing it so that friends and family walk down the center isle, then Dan and his parents come into the chapel from one side at the same time as Phil and his parents from the other side of the chapel. They met in the middle and people took their seats, ready to watch the ceremony.

It was a beautiful ceremony, filled with small jokes and soft tears as the two said their vows. When the minister asked for the rings, they had their dog walk down the aisle to them, holding the rings in a small bag in her mouth. Finally, the time had come, and they were declared Mr and Mr Dan and Phil Howell-Lester. "You may now kiss the groom," the minister said, but Dan was already grabbing Phil and pulling him closer to himself. "It's about damn time," he whispered before bringing Phil's lips onto his own.

They walked hand-and-hand down the aisle, nodding and smiling at friends and family as they passed by, accepting the congratulatory cheers. They were finally one.
