Dan
Phil and I were on our way up north to see his family for the first time since Martyn and Cornelia had their new baby boy Matthew, and not gonna lie, I was hyped as fuck. Their oldest, Grace, is four, and every time Phil and I visit we get to spoil her, and now we get to spoil Matthew as well. The train couldn't go fast enough; the whole ride felt like forever, when in reality it was a little under three hours. Phil and I spent far too long in the shops the other day trying to pick something out for the new little addition to the Lester family, but we couldn't decide- it was all too cute and small. We eventually decided on a soft pj set that had various animals on it, and then we got Grace a new doll so she wouldn't feel left out. The wrapped gifts sat between us on the floor, and I kept glancing down to make sure they were still there.
Phil reached over and placed his hand over mine, squeezing it softly. "Almost there," he said with a smile.
"I hope they like the gifts," I said nervously; I never know what to give a baby, especially when they're just gonna grow out of it.
"They'll love them, don't worry. He's gonna look so cute in the little pj's, and Gracie loves her dolls." He gave a reassuring smile, bumping my shoulder with his slightly.
"I know, I just, I don't know. I'm just excited to meet the little guy. Remember when we first got to meet Gracie? She was so soft and tiny; I didn't want to let her go. Now, they have a new baby who's going to be equally soft and tiny and I can't wait until we have our own soft and tiny baby one day."
"I can't wait either. I know it can be disheartening watching someone else have a child while you wait for the adoption agency to call, but we just have to keep waiting a little bit longer, and until then, we get to play with our adorable niece and nephew. We'll get our own baby soon, I can just feel it, but today we're gonna go up and be the best damn uncles there ever was."
I nodded and felt the smile return to my face. I turned towards him, overcome with emotion, and pulled him closer to me. "I love you so much, thank you." And with that I pulled him into a kiss, not giving a damn about anyone else on the train. It wasn't long and obnoxious or anything, just a simple, tender kiss to express my gratitude. Somehow, Phil always knows what to say and when to say it, and I couldn't thank him enough.
The rest of the train ride was spent hand-in-hand, looking out the window and chatting. It seemed to pass much faster, and before we knew it we were in a cab on our way to Martyn and Cornelia's house. It was a fairly short cab ride, and we quickly found ourselves knocking on their door.
Martyn opened the door and invited us in, greeting us with hugs. Grace came bounding in next, jumping up to try to see inside the bags we brought-obviously presents for her and her brother.
"Uncle Dan! Uncle Phil! What's in the bag?" Martyn cleared his throat, and Grace stopped jumping and tried to contain her excitement. "I mean hello nice to see you." I chuckled and leaned down to get on her level.
"What makes you think we got you anything?" I asked, raising an eyebrow playfully.
"Becauuuuse. They look like presents. Are they presents Uncle Dan?"
I shrugged, then glanced up at Phil. "I don't know. What do you think, Philly, do you think there's presents in those bags?"
Her eyes lit up as she eagerly looked up to Phil. "Oh this?" he said, gesturing to one of the bags. "Nah, I think this is full of broccoli. Gracie would hate this. But this bag," he claimed as he held up the bag with her present, "now, this bag has something she would like." She giggled as Phil handed the bag over, then looked at Martyn, who gave a nod and said she could open the package.
