Love's in Bloom

Phil

Spring isn't the worst time of the year, but I've never particularly enjoyed it. Not only do the bugs come back, but my allergies get thrown out of balance. I've been stuck at home all week with the sniffles, and I became best friends with my tissue box, which I had to refill at least three times over the week.

I finally started feeling better when I noticed that I could smell again. I lit my favorite candle and took a deep breath, enjoying the fruity smell. Looking around my room, I realized what a complete mess I've been living in for a while. Taking advantage of my sudden spike in health, I turned on some music and tidied up a bit. I moved all the wads of tissue from my floor to the trash, washed my sheets, and opened the window for a while to let in some fresh air. After my room was tidy, I closed the window, blew out the candle, and jumped into the shower.

Once freshly washed, I put on my favorite jeans and a simple graphic t-shirt before deciding to take a stroll. It wasn't too warm out yet, nor was it too chilly, so I was fine going out in what I was wearing. Although I don't live in the most crowded part of town, there are a few shops close enough to my apartment to walk to. My favorite place is a small family-owned coffee shop just a few buildings up, so I head out in that direction. There's something calming about getting out and walking around, especially on such a lovely day like today. I took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh air and the fact that my lungs/nose were deciding to work again.

I stepped into the small coffee shop, relishing in the smell of freshly baked pastries and brewed coffee. The bell above the door rang when it opened, and the young woman behind the counter looked up and waved. I walked up to the counter and was greeted with a smile from Angie.

"Hey Phil! Would you like your regular today?"

"Yes please, thank you," I answered. She's a sweet girl, and we went on a date or two, but it didn't really work out. I didn't mind much- we're better off as friends. Plus, after our failed dates she tried setting me up with a friend of hers, but he wasn't my type much. I appreciated the effort.

"Here you go Phil. Have a good day!" She said as she slid the cup my way.

"Thank you, you too Angie!" I took the cup and waved goodbye as I walked back outside into the springtime sun.

I walked aimlessly for a few blocks, sipping the coffee as I went. I didn't have anywhere to be, so I let my body take control and lead me wherever it wanted to go. About two blocks from my apartment, I found myself stopped in front of a flower shop that I've never noticed before. It was a cute shop with large windows and tons of colorful flowers in the display. I decided to go in.

The first thing I noticed upon walking into the shop was how good it smelled. The floral scent wasn't overwhelming like I thought it would be, which was a nice surprise, but another nice surprise was the scent of brewed coffee. I fiddled with the near-empty cup I held in my hands and took another sip. I decided to look around the shop, maybe even look for some flowers for my apartment.

"Hi, can I help you with anything?" I heard behind me. I turned to face the source of the question, but my throat suddenly felt dry. The prettiest boy I've ever seen stood behind me, wearing a gardening apron. He had curly hair and brown eyes and the warmest smile; he even had dimples. I got the sudden urge to reach out and poke his dimples and play with his curls, but I refrained myself because I don't want to seem weird.

I managed to choke out a mangled "uhm I don't uh yeah um sorry," really using everything I learned while completing my degree in the English language. His smile deepened and I noticed his cheeks flushed slightly, but I wasn't going to bring it up because I knew I was flaming red myself.
