Dan
"Phil, I don't think we're gonna be good at this, you literally tripped up the stairs this morning."
"Shh! That wasn't my fault! The stairs are too small for my large feet. This is different, come on let's at least try it."
"Fine," I grumbled while I finished tying the laces on the skates, "but if we fall and break something I'm gonna throw a fit." Phil scoffed playfully and stood up, reaching out and offering me his hand. I grabbed hold and stood up, lacing his fingers between mine. "Okay, let's do this," I whispered.
We shuffled awkwardly to the ice, trying our hardest not to fall over on the slippery surface. We stepped out onto the ice and I desperately clutched the side of the rink for balance. I could hear Phil giggling next to me and I muttered profanities under my breath.
"Dan, you look like a baby giraffe who's just learning how to walk," he managed to get out between giggles.
"Shut up, I hate you," I muttered, finally getting the hang of the ice and standing up straighter, but still clutching the side of the rink.
Phil laughed; obviously I'm not threatening enough when I'm literally clutching the side of the rink to keep from falling on my ass. He reached his hand out again, urging me to grab hold. After a few seconds, Phil gave an exasperated huff.
"Come on, grab my hand. If we fall, we'll fall together," he said.
I cocked my head to the side, questioning his offer. "Ah fuck it, let's do this," I said as I grabbed his hand, intertwining our fingers. He smiled and I couldn't help but smile back.
We made our way around the rink slowly, gaining confidence as we went. There weren't many others at the rink, so if we fell we wouldn't make complete fools of ourselves, which was nice. Phil miraculously didn't fall over during our first lap, which was pleasantly surprising. Once we made it back to where we started, Phil let go of my hand. I looked down and whimpered, immediately missing his warm hand.
"Stay here, watch this!" he exclaimed as he took off skating.
"Phil! What the fuck! You never told me you could skate, you asshole!"
I heard Phil's giggle as he glided around the rink effortlessly, spinning occasionally. I watched in awe as the clumsiest man I know skated around the rink. When he finally made it back to where I was standing I couldn't help but stare in awe, not knowing if I wanted to kiss him or slap him more. I ended up just staring at him and flinging my hands through the air, trying desperately to make sense of what I just saw. Phil just giggled, mocking me.
"Phil, how the- what the- what.." I trailed off, not able to form a coherent sentence as he kept giggling.
He finally was able to stop giggling enough to offer an explanation. "When I was young, the lake by my house would freeze over when it got cold and all the neighborhood kids would go and play on it."
"So you're telling me that the same man who trips up the stairs is also some kind of skating genius?"
"Something like that," he offered, pulling me close.
"I can't believe you."
"Shut up, Howell," he said as he leaned in and gave me a kiss. I immediately felt heat run to my cheeks as I pulled him closer.
Once our lips pulled apart he laced our fingers together again as we began another lap around the rink. I only fell on my ass twice, and each time Phil helped me up after performing some type of extra flashy skating move. The final time I fell, I pulled his ass down with me, leading to chilly giggles on the ice.
