The next day at school was horrible. Nick and Mackenzie kept on flaunting their relationship. What was worse was suddenly Kris and Dee hated me. They treated me the way Mackenzie did and they well… It was just really bad. Mimi and I didn’t know what had gotten into them. Mimi and I were hoping that they would change back but it’s been two weeks and nothing has changed.
After lunch I was walking down the halls to my next class and I saw Dee and Vincent talking.
“Okay, you said we needed to talk in private. We’re in private.” Dee said softly as she played with a lock of her blonde hair.
“Look…There’s no easy way to say this but…I’m breaking up with you.” My brother said. Dee’s eyes widened in shock.
“What?”
“I’m breaking up with you.” My brother repeated.
“No! You can’t! Vincent you can’t do this to me!” Dee said desperately as she grabbed his arm to stop him from walking away.
“I can and I will Dee! Let go!” Vincent yelled. Dee was on the verge of tears.
“No. Please. You can’t leave me.” Dee begged.
“Let go.” Vincent said as he forcefully tugged his arm from her.
“Why?!” She demanded. “Why are you breaking up with me!”
“Because you changed! You used to be happy, caring, fun, kind, understanding and basically you were amazing! For god’s sake I’m not saying that you were perfect but to me you were! Dee I loved you! But you changed. And I hate what you’ve become!” Vincent yelled. “You’re lying to me, and keeping secrets from me! Dee if we don’t have trust here what do we have?!” Dee couldn’t respond.
“Don’t do this to me Vincent. Please don’t.” Dee pleaded.
“You’ve apparently gotten selfish as well.” Vincent stated. From where I was standing I could see how much Vincent loved her and how it killed him to say those things to her.
“I can change…” Dee said softly.
“It’s over.” Vincent said stiffly and he turned around to walk away.
“Did you cheat on me? Is there someone else?” Dee demanded. Vincent looked at her and there was so much pain in his eyes, it was obvious that he was debating whether to lie or tell the truth. “Be honest with me! You at least owe me this.” Dee begged. Vincent sighed and turned away.
“I loved you.” Was all he said as a response. Hearing those words. Dee looked at his back as he walked away and once he was gone, she ran off in the other direction away from him and didn’t look back. Neither of them noticed me and I found myself crying with Dee, even though she hated me.
That’s where Nick found me after school when I mysteriously disappeared. Curled up on the ground with tears streaming down my face. He didn’t even look twice at me. All he did was glare at me and tell me Mimi was looking for me.
She was a mess. She just kept on crying. It was over a guy she left. She loved him, but she felt that he deserved better. After our pity party we were prepared to leave school. But I was not prepared to see her guy.
Mike.
Mimi and Mike. Looking at the two of them I knew that they were perfect for each other, it was so obvious that they loved each other. He grabbed her arm and tugged her towards him and whispered something in her ear. Mimi glared at him and shot something back.
“I mean it Maddie.” He called. Mimi glared at him.
“So do I Mike.” She yelled back before dashing off. I grabbed his arm and stopped him from chasing after her.
“Don’t.” I warned and he sighed. I ran off after her to go find her instead.
It wasn’t hard she was at her house. Her older brother Cameron was over and he was trying to cook. All their faces looked so familiar. Like I had seen a younger version of each of them. But I knew that that was impossible.
Cameron looked very familiar but I figured it was because of the family resemblance. Mimi and I sat there laughing on the floor as he attempted to cook. The only things in the kitchen that looked semi-edible were the uncooked eggs. We laughed at the boy as he gave us a look that told us we were in his bad books.
“Gee, topping that business studies degree sure isn’t improving your cooking.” Mimi’s younger brother Dylan teased. We laughed and ruffled the adorable 13 year old brother teased. Cameron shot Dylan a menacing look which we laughed at.
“Whatever you say snot nose.” Cameron shot at Dylan. He frowned obviously not happy with this statement.
“Who are you calling snot nose, mini mutt?” Dylan fired back.
“Snot nose.” Cam yelled.
“Mini mutt.” Dylan screamed.
“Snot face.” Cameron shot.
“Puny prick.” Dylan shot back absentmindedly.
“Stupid.” Cameron yelled.
“Imbecilic.” Dylan shot back as he readjusted his glasses.
“What does that even mean?” Cameron asked instantly confused.
“It means idiot or Cameron.” Dylan shot out.
“Who are you calling an idiot, idiot!” Cameron yelled.
“You! Or are you too stupid to understand that?” Dylan quickly retorted which brought on a round of insults.
“Book worm!” Cameron yelled trying to offend Dylan.
“Cognitively deficit!” Dylan said. I swear this kid is purposely using as many complicated words as possible.
“What does cognitively deficit even mean!” Cameron asked.
“Mentally incapacitated.” Dylan explained. That helps so much and further enforced my idea that he was using his superior vocabulary to his advantage.
“What?” Cameron asked blurrily.
“Mimi, how am I related to this simpleton again?” Dylan asked.
“He’s your brother hun.” Mimi instantly replied.
“I have no idea how we even share the same genes.” Dylan said as he quickly plucked a strand of hair from his brothers head, before plucking one off of his own.
“What was that for?!” Cameron yelled.
“Deoxyribonucleic-acid test.” He said as he shot off to his room.
“He knows the official name for DNA?” I asked as I stared at the little boy in shock. Mimi nodded her head. He’s one smart kid.
The doorbell rang. Cameron went to open the door. My dad stood there and froze at the sight of Cameron. Looking back and forth between them I understood why Cameron looked so familiar. He had dad’s…Everything. The only difference was Cameron’s black eyes which he had inherited from his mother.
No. He wouldn’t. It’s not possible.
Dad looked around the room and they froze on Mimi’s gorgeous mother.
This can’t be happening. It only happens in movies.
Dylan rushed down stairs and into my dad’s arms.
“Dad!” He screamed as he launched himself into my dad’s arms. All those long business meetings, all those extended holidays, all those times he left for a ‘quick’ 5 hour errand was a lie.
His eyes begged me to understand but I couldn’t. I ran out of the house, away from my best friend’s family that felt like my own family. Too bad they literally are. It didn’t matter where I’d go, the pain of my father’s betrayal would always follow.
