The backup plan

I picked up my phone and called the one person who could possibly help me and make me feel better… Olivia.

“Hola Lia!” Olivia said cheerfully.

“Hey…” I sniffed.

“Who did it! What happened! If it’s a guy! Screw that! I’m on my way! See you ASAP!” Olive screeched before hanging up. Okay, things didn’t go the way I expected… I sighed. Plan A failed, time to go onto plan B.

“Hey Mike.” I said sadly when he picked up.

“What did Nick do this time?” Was all he asked me.

“What makes you think Nick was the one who did it?” I asked.

“He screws everything up.” Strangely enough it made me laugh a little. “Go back home I’m taking you out.” He said before he hung up. To be honest I didn’t expect him to do that. I didn’t know if plan B failed or what. I walked home and put on a green floral patterned sundress that matched my eyes and a pair of brown sandals. Mike turned up half an hour later and drove me off to the lake nearby that I’ve never been to.

“Why are we here?” I asked. It was the first thing I’ve said to him other than greeting him and asking how he was.

“And she talks! Well it’s simple, Nick never took you here so I figured you’d prefer it here.” He said happily. Mike may have been the best option I have yet.

“Thanks.” He frowned at that.

“Lia, the point of this is to cheer you up, not make you more depressed. You need to bounce back, it’s simple.” He said as he ruffled my hair. I cracked a smile at that.

“You’re good at this. Have you done it before?” I asked as I smiled sadly at the lake.

“Yeah. I have actually.” He didn’t add on to it and I didn’t ask.

“I see.”

“Anyway away from the depressing topics, do you like sea food?” And just like that Mike cheered me up. Nearby, further up the stretch of beach was a sea food restaurant. The food was amazing, not too oily or greasy, the food was well cooked and looked really good and smelled just as good. We talked and laughed over lunch and it was the most fun I had all day. It was close to sunset and we were walking along the beach when he finally asked the question I dreaded.

“So anyway why so glum today?” He finally asked. I sighed I knew this question would pop up.

“You know…Nick screwed up again.” I evaded. He shot me a disapproving look.

“Lia, tell me.” I nodded my head.

“He yelled at me a lot. It wasn’t the way he usually does. He sounded like he absolutely hated me and-” I was saying until Mike cut me off.

“I know that. I meant why do you care?” He said. I had no idea. You’d think hearing a guy say that to you would cure me of any romantic notions I had of him but it didn’t, it made me feel worse. Nick…

I hate my life.

I had a great guy. He wasn’t the nicest. He wasn’t the gentlest. But he was him. And even though he was a complete jerk. He was still there for me at times…And I didn’t see how lucky I was until I lost him. God I’m so stupid.

“I don’t know.” Was all I said as I stared off into the distance across the lake.

“You’ll figure it out some day…It was like that with me and my first. I fell. Hard. I confessed to her and she freaked out and left.” I looked at him in shock.

“And then?” I asked.

“Nothing. I still love her. But she obviously doesn’t feel the same way about me. That’s why I’m here, she’s here. And even though she doesn’t feel the same way about me, I still have to try.”

“I’m sorry.” I whispered. He shrugged.

“I’m fine, I just hope I still have a chance.” Was all he said.

“Why is Nick so angry at you?” I asked. He looked guilty.

“Nick and I were best friends…Until I slept with his wife…I was the reason for their divorce. I got really drunk one night and I woke up in bed with her.”

“That explains a lot.” Was all I said. He chuckled and playfully shoved me.

“C’mon Lia, you’ll be late.” He led me to his car and he dropped me off at home. I smiled at him and hugged him tightly.

“Good luck with her, I hope you get her.” I whispered into his neck. He laughed and ruffled my hair up.

“Whatever you say. Watch out for yourself and it’ll be alright.” I laughed at him and opened the door to my house.

“Sooo…Was that your boyfriend?” I froze at the voice. Unbelievable.
