We landed in Copenhagen only hours before the gig started.
'So much for sightseeing.' I thought with a sigh.
But I was there for work after all and had a gig to review. I guess it was only fair not to have much time to dick around.
I didn't know any songs by the Blue Van. What I did know about them was they toured with Jet at one point and Cam Muncey had a shirt with their name on the front of it. I gazed at it that night in Cleveland, admiring the words spread across his chest.
"Alright guys, this is Jules." Nic introduced me to everyone in the band.
"Hi Jules!" They said in unison.
"Oh my gosh! I just realized somethin'." Matt piped up with that sweet grin of his. He turned to me. "You're called Blue too!"
The band started to chuckle at that.
"Yeah. I am." I replied. "But-"
But there was no chance for me to explain myself. They took it and ran with it. The band anyway. Nic was too serious for nicknames. About like Noel. And even though Matt made the supposed connection, he didn't join in on keeping it going.
"C'mon, Jules!" He said. "Let's go wait for the show."
The venue crew let us in before the rest of general admission so we could be guaranteed a spot in the first row. It felt a bit like the House of Blues as far as size went. I wanted to get a real feel for attending the gigs I reviewed which is why I never opted to stay stageside. I was so used to the luxuries of having in's with bands that sometimes it was fun to "feel like a commoner" again.
Eventually, the venue started to fill with people. Matt had me stand in front of him so he could protect me from the crowding and ensure I kept a front and center view of the show. We debated on getting drinks to take with us (I was really in the mood for an electric lemonade) but decided against it. People would probably get to bouncing around and our drinks would probably end up on the floor.
After what felt like forever, the stagelights changed and some smoke blew across the stage. People started cheering and that's when I finally noticed the drumhead.
"Oh my God!" I exclaimed as I read the name on the front of it.
And then they sauntered out...with Nic leading the way.
They broke into that drawn out introductory version of that age-old song and the memories started flowing. How this happened I have no idea but at that point I didn't fucking care.
"Thank you very much!" Nic said when they finished it. "We are the rock band, Jet from Melbourne, Australia! Thanks so much for comin' down. It's been a while hasn't it? We've got a very lovely guest in the audience tonight, ladies and gents." He glanced down at me for a second before looking back up and out into the rest of the audience.
I continued to gaze at him wondering what the heck he was up to.
"Not only is she here to baby-sit my little brother." He continued. "But she's here to give us a review as well."
I smiled to myself.
"Hope we do good."
"Happy Birthday, Jules!" Matt said into my ear.
My face twisted up in confusion. "It's not my birthday!" I informed him.
"For the greatest rock journalist in the UK and Wales!" Mark said into his microphone as he raised his hand in the air. "C'mon give it up!"
