Chapter 29

Sodapop's POV

Candy took a deep breath and surprisingly said "I found my reason." I stared at her in disbelief until Two-Bit said "Well that's great babe! But what is it?" Candy sat down while Beth started to clean her up on the couch. Candy told us what the priest had said and that Candy wants to go to church on Sunday's. Not only that, Candy wants US to go to CHURCH with her. Shoot, we haven't been to church since mom and dad died. We kinda just looked at her about what she said about us going to church. "Candy, that's great and all but I don't think that church is a good idea for us." Darry said and Candy looked at him. "Guys, we really should go to church. I know it's hard to go without mom and dad but, that doesn't mean we should just stop. Besides I think we all have at least something to confess or needs to be said." Candy explained and yeah I mean, I guess she's right. "Fine. We'll start and go every Sunday." I said and the gang looked at me and I gave them that look that said 'do it for her'. Soon they all agreed and Candy was more than excited about it. I looked at the gang and they seemed happy that she was happy except June. I don't know what's wrong but, it may be what happened to her sister or something else. I will talk to her later about it.

June's POV

I'm happy that Candy is happy but, I have bad news. Not bad bad news but not great news. Tanner and I aren't doing so well I guess. We have been more distant lately and he said that he has something to talk to me about. Tanner then walks over to me and whispers in my ear "I need to talk to you outside." I looked at him and he had no expression on his face what so ever. I nodded and followed him outside and the gang gave me winks and gave fake kisses. I walked outside and Tanner turned to me and said "Listen June, I can't do this anymore." What? Do what? What is he talking about? "What do you mean?" I asked and he sighed really loud. I turned around to look at the house to see if the gang was watching and sure enough they were. "I can't keep hiding this from you. I just can't. Your my best friend and I need your advice on how to ask this girl I like to go on a date with me." He said and I was so happy! He is finally going to ask me!!! I just want to scream in excitement! I smiled and said "Go on. I'm listening." He looked at the ground and said "I really like her and I don't know how to ask her. Her name is Emily Bathwith. She is the most amazing girl ever and I just don't know how to ask her to go on a date with me." What the hell just happened? Emily Bathwith?! My WORST enemy from the first grade?! She was one of them who duct taped me to a tree! Tanner likes her?? No this can't be happening. "Tanner, I thought you liked me?" I said with tears forming in my eyes. He looked at me confused and said "I do. As a best friend. Like I said. What? You thought I liked you more than a friend? June, don't get me wrong, you are pretty but I don't like you like that. Your not mad right?" I looked at the ground with shaking hands and said "No, Tanner I thought you liked me more but I was stupid. You like the girl that I hate the most. More than Bob and Randy and you knew it but yet you still like her. After everything I told you she did to me. But you have to be careful who you open up to. Only a few people actually care, the rest are just curious. Right? I trusted you! Tanner, leave and never come back. Please. Do it for your best friend. Because honestly, she wants you to." It broke my heart to see the look on his face. But he asked for it. He hesitated but said "Bye June." Then he left just like that. I fell on the ground and pulled my knees up to my chest and cried. I put my head in my knees and cried even more. I heard the door open and then close. "June, it's the gang." I heard Kathy's voice say. I just cried even more. I felt a hand on my back and start rubbing it. "He meant so much to me! I loved him so much! I didn't say it though. I should have but I waited too long! I'm so stupid! He's gone!" I sobbed and I looked up to see Dally rubbing my back and looking in the other direction. "June, I don't even know how to start with this. But I know you will get through this. We believe in you. He is a-" Dally started but Darry cut him off by saying "Dallas! Listen June, not every guy is going to be perfect but that's ok. If you still like him even though he did this, then don't give up on him. Keep fighting for him because if he likes you the same way you like him, then I promise you he will come back." I don't know if I can keep fighting. Everything is happening to fast! "He likes Emily!! The one who duct taped me to the tree with her snobby Soc friends! How? Why? When? I can't think straight! Oh my gosh! What is Tanner doing to me?! He gives me butterflies every time I see him and he makes me feel like shit when we are upset at each other! Sorry Darry for cussing but I'm not in the mood and Dally rubbed it off on me! But I still love you Dally." I said. Dally chuckled at the end and said "I love ya too kid. But honestly. Thanks for ratting me out you little shit." He looked over at Darry to see him glaring at Dally. Darry said that he would talk to Dally later and Dally gave me a fake death glare. I wiped away my tears and got up and said "I'm going to bed." They nodded and I got a lot of 'goodnights' and 'I love you's' I returned them and went inside and went to bed. What did I do wrong?
