June's POVIt's been almost two weeks since Soda has been put in the hospital. He is doing fine for a person on life support, I guess. The gang is depressed. They haven't left because they want to be here if they pull the plug or there is a miracle that will happen. The doctor is surprised that he's still alive. That's a good sign I guess.
Right now I'm in my room since the gang is at the hospital. I can't stand to see my happy-go-lucky older brother in that state. But who shot Sodapop? Who would even think about shooting him?
I don't think he has anybody that really hates him or he doesn't like... or does he?
I decided that I should probably stop sitting here in my house doing nothing. I got up and paces my room trying to think of something to do that's useful. It was like a light bulb popped over my head ad I snapped my fingers knowing what I can do.
I walked out of my room and into the kitchen and started cleaning the dishes and wiping down the counters and table.
Then I headed to the living room. I picked up plates, beer cans, magazines, newspapers, shoes, and things like that. Then I went to each of my siblings rooms and picked up their dirty clothes and just really cleaned their rooms.
I started a load of laundry and then I started to vacuum the whole house. We don't have a nice or big house but after everything was done, man was I tired.
I sat on the couch and rested for a few minutes thinking what else I could do. With Soda in the hospital, how will Darry pay for food, school, the house, all of the bills, all the electrical things that we have, and take care of the gang? The gang is helping out but they need money to help support them and their siblings too.
Maybe I can help. I can get a job somewhere. I can work at the Dingo! Yeah! I can do that. I mean, how hard can it be?
I walked done to the Dingo and asked for the manager. When she came, I told her what I was here for and she told me to follow her. We walked into what I'm guessing her office. I sat down in the chair that was in front of the desk and she sat in the chair that was behind the desk.
"So, why do you want to work here?"
"I need money." I stated.
She looked at me for a second and said "Dear, how old are you?"
Geez, just give me the damn job already! "I'm fourteen, ma'am."
"Aren't you a little young to get a job?" She asked not too sure of herself.
"No... look, I need this job to help support my family. I'm just asking for a chance." I said leaning back in my seat.
She also leaned back in her seat and said "So that's the reason. You don't want to work here just because of money but because of your family."
"Ok?"
"You got the job. You start tonight at five." She said as she guided me out if her office. "Thank you so much!" I said as I ran out of the Dingo and towards the hospital to tell the gang the news.
I got to Soda's room and took a deep breath. I opened the door and the gang looked to see who it was. I smiled and waved.
"Hey June, how are ya?" Dally asked as he put his arm around Kathy's shoulder.
"I'm good Dally, how 'bout yourself?"
"Fine I guess. What are ya up to?" He asked as he turned back to look at my brother.
"I have good news, I got a job!" I said excitedly. No one moved as the smile on my face started to fade as I got the reaction I didn't want to have.
"J-June that's great! But, you didn't need to. We'll be fine." Darry said and that surprised me because I thought he was going to yell at me. "Where are you working at?"
"The Dingo. I start tonight at five." I said as I walked over to Soda's bed. I moved the bangs out of his face as I lightly brushed the back of my hand against his cheek. I took in his appearance as I noticed that he was very pale. He looked even skinnier than he usually does. He just looks... weak. I watched as his chest slowly rose and fell back down. Even in this state, he still has his movie star looks that every guy wants.
I slightly smiled as I put my hand in his as I pulled up a chair that wasn't being used. "Did the doctor come back and say any news that we don't already know?" I asked as Darry spoke up and said, "He said that his chances of surviving are getting better than they were before."
I smiled imagining Soda being his normal self again and working at the DX like he used to with the girls all over him. His normal goofy self and that movie star smile that he used so often that everybody loves. I don't know if I was in thought that I started imagining things, but I swear that I felt his hand hand move in mine. Or maybe it didn't. There it goes again! By know I was breathing faster and I was paying a lot more attention. "G-Guys, his hand is moving!!" I exclaimed as the gang rushed over. Darry quickly got a nurse and the doctor. The nurse checked all of his IV's and the doctor checked his chart and his heart monitor. The nurse and the doctor both looked at each other and then to us.
"He's waking up."
