Chapter 45

June's POV

Soda guided me out into the living room and on the couch. I guess everyone was up because it was loud. I just sat there and listened wishing I could see. Someone came and sat next to me on each side. "Hey June, happy birthday!" I'm guessing Crystal said because it sounds like her. If it is Crystal then the other person must be Ponyboy. "Happy birthday to you too. Happy birthday Pony." I said and I don't even have to be able to see him to know that he has a look of confusion. "How did you know it was me?" He asked and I chuckled and said "If Crystal is here then you are too. You guys literally go everywhere together." I could picture in my head them both blushing. "Ok, birthday kids! What do you guys wanna do today?" It sounded like Evie asked. I shrugged my shoulders and said "There isn't much I can do." I looked down and felt their eyes on me. "How about we all get ready and we'll go out and we'll have a lot of fun. I made sure that no one had work today so we can all be together. so everyone go get dressed!" Darry instructed and I got up and felt for my cane until someone gave it to me as I smiled at them. I was very cautious about where I was going because I didn't want to stab my toe or somethin'. Man, I hate it when that happens. I'm pretty sure I made it to the right room and once I was sure, I carefully went over to my closet and then it hit me. How will I get a outfit that will match? this is so hard. I hate not being able to see. I feel bad for the people who are permanently blind. It's hard. I grabbed some kind of shirt and shorts and put them on. Then I did everything else that was necessary and walked out of my room. I heard the gang talking but it felt like once I walked out into the room, they stopped. "Ok guys. I'm ready." I said as I began to find the front door. There was a hand on my shoulder and they said "Umm, June? Your shirt is inside out and backward and you're wearing it looks like Darry's jeans." I think Candy was the one who said that. I think I looked at them and then looked down at my outfit. "Oh." I said feeling embarrassed. I think Candy grabbed my arm and said "C'mon, I'll help you." Then she gently dragged me away back into my room. A couple minutes later, Candy was done picking out my outfit, making sure it wasn't inside out, and helping me get dressed, we were done. I told Candy that I didn't want to look like I was blind so she put a pair of sunglasses on me and grabbed my hand and led me out. It was much easier to be guided by someone then with a cane. So I just kept hanging onto Candy's hand and then we got to the rest of the gang and explained the glasses then we left. We decided to walk today and of course the Socs had to bother us. I don't know how many of them there was but they drove by inn their mustang and told the guys to wash all of the grease out of their hair. the guys then threw rocks and sticks at them and they drove of but they will most likely be back. Of course. All of a sudden, I saw a tree, the Dingo in the distance, and the lot. Then everything went back to black. I stopped dead in my tracks and gasped. I know I caught the gang's attention because the laughing stopped. Beth asked "June what's wrong?" I smiled and I said "I got my vision back but then it went away!" I was so happy! "Hey kid, are you sure that it wasn't your imagination?" A thick New York accent asked. I knew it wasn't Braeden because he doesn't have a thick accent. So it must be Dally. "I'm positive! I'll prove it too! We're by the Dingo and the lot!" I said with a smile from ear to ear. "You're right! Good June! I'm happy for ya." Jessie said and I think she put her arm around me. I thought about something that I've been meaning to ask the gang so might as well ask them now while they are in a good mood. Besides, who's gonna say no to a blind kid? "Hey guys, when I get my vision back, can I learn how to drive?" I asked and I heard some chuckle as we continued to walk. "Well, since you're fourteen today, I guess." Darry said and I squealed with excitement. Wow, I'm turning into a real girl. I need to cut it out and look tuff and tough. "Can Dally and Two-Bit teach me?" I asked probably already knowing the answer. "NO!" The whole gang yelled but probably not Two-Bit and Dally. "Fine, Can all of the guys teach me?" I asked and Rosie asked "Why don't you want the girls to teach you?" I said "Because the guys are supposed to teach me how to do stupid stuff especially Dally, Two-Bit, Steve, and Soda. The girls are supposed to teach me things whatever girls do. Besides Soda and Steve know a car inside and out. Dally and Two-Bit are great crazy drivers. Ponyboy and Johnny will most likely be scared so that will motivate me to drive wild but not to wild. Then Darry will be all responsible and Braeden will be telling him to loosen up. We'll be fine." The guys chuckled and Beth said "I guess that'll be alright. But you have to wait until your vision returns." I nodded. Then I heard an engine behind us and somebody said "Hey June! haven't seen you in a while. Come hang out with us!" I kept walking with the others as I ignored them and the Socs kept pushing and pushing their limits. They were making fun of Pony's name until I've finally had enough. "Hey Bob! I was just thinking that if you add another 'o' to your name, your name would be boob! So I wouldn't be making fun of other people's name anymore when yours could be boob." The gang laughed as I heard car door open and slam shut. "At least I'm not blind!" Bob yelled and I laughed and said "You know, you have more dick in your personality than you do in your pants." I laughed really hard at this along with the rest of the gang. Then after the gang chased the Socs off, we started walking until I heard gasps and someone whispered "It's Tanner." Way to be quiet guys. "June can I talk to you in private?" A voice that I once and always will love asked. All of a sudden, I saw everything perfectly clear and it stayed that way. I nodded and Tanner grabbed my hand and pulled me away from the gang. I wasn't going to tell him that I wasn't blind anymore so I'm just gonna keep acting like I am. But why can I see now? Why did my vision come back when Tanner came? "How've you been June?" Tanner asked out of nowhere. I looked at him closely and said "I'm doing alright I guess." No I'm not! I miss him a little too much, a little too often, and a little more every day. Cheesy, I know but it's true. "Good." Tanner said and we spent the next few minutes talking about what we missed in each others lives. He has a girlfriend now. He moved on, my turn. I thought and I wanted to cry because the worst feeling is knowing he's moved on and I haven't. but it's time to let him go. The way that we kissed, smiled, and smelled. I have to let it go. The way his hands felt on my waist, the way he said my name, I have to let it go. Because that's who he was, not who he is. After a few minutes of talking, we hugged and then went our own ways.

Tanner and June's POV

I saw her today. I saw him today. It seems like it has been forever. I wonder if he still cares. She looks better than before. I couldn't stop staring at him. I asked her how she was doing. I asked him about his new girlfriend. I'd pick her out over any girl I'm with. he's probably really happy now. I can't even look at her without crying. He couldn't even look at me. I told her I miss her. He didn't mean it. I mean it. He doesn't mean it. I love her. He loves his new girlfriend. I held her for the last time. He gave me a friendly hug. Then I went home and cried. Then I went home and cried. I lost her. I love him.
