Chapter 8
Jolene's P.O.V.
It's mid morning, and we just arrived at the base of the hard part of the mountain we need to climb to get to the portal. Confused? Well basically we kept going after we were attacked by the squids, and slept for the night in a clearing in the forest father down the path. When we got up the next morning we wasted no time getting back on the road. Now we're here.
I flew down to the ground where the others were waiting for me. "I'll go find a path that will be easy for the horses to climb, and then I'll come back here to show you." I explained. They nodded, so I flew upwards.
I flew around until I settled on the safest looking path. It wasn't to steep of an angle, nor was it cover in small sharp shone that could get stuck in the horse's hoofs. I knew that was our best bet.
I flew back down to the others and motioned for them to follow me. Naturally Star came first, and the others followed. I flew up the path, not to high in the air so that it would be obvious where I wanted them to go.
~~--TIME SKIP~~--
We reached the entrance to the cave the portal was in, around the afternoon. Both Sky and Olivia had gotten off their horses and were walking around to stretch their legs.
"Wow! What a view!" Olivia commented looking down the mountain.
"You're right!" Sky agreed, then he turned to me and asked, "Is this what it's like to fly?"
"In some ways, yes, and in others, no. The views are usually a lot like this, yes, but standing up here lacks the same feeling of freedom, and the air rushing past you. It's missing the joy of moving around without having to stick to a certain elevation of area. It lacks the thrill of doing tricks, and diving down towards the ground, only pulling up at the last second to save your life. Actually flying sometimes feels like swimming." I smiled, thinking about all the amazing flights I've been on.
I walked over to where the horses were standing, my tail and wings disappearing while I walked. I took some leads and tied the horses to a tall rock that had plenty of grass growing around it. I slipped my saddle bags off of Star and she sighed. Olivia and Sky both followed my lead, and unsaddled their horses.
I started to walk farther into the cave that eventually had glowstone all along the walls to make sure the cave wasn't dark enough for hostile creatures to come out. As I walked I heard 2 sets of footsteps echoing behind me. Good.
We walked down the tunnel for a little while till we reach the portal. It's not a very short tunnel, and there are traps set along it that I placed there where I made this portal. Luckily I still remembered where they all were. Sky had almost triggered one, we managed to stop him just in time. I may know where all the traps are, but I can barely remember what half of them are/do, so anything could have happened to Sky, from being stuck in a hole or a net with no way out, to falling into lava or killed some other way. Yeah... I really didn't want people to get that map, or anything else I had hidden in the nether.
The portal made the weird water drop sound that it always made when it wasn't in use, soon however it would be making the annoying screeching sounds that it did when somebody, or some people walked through. I took a step closer to it. I didn't really like going through the portal, it messed with my head.
I know that in the nether, compasses and clocks don't work. Now everybody has an internal clock, and compass in them, whether they use them or not. For a dragon these internal clocks and compasses are relied on during flight or any other way of traveling, and while we're sleeping or in caves, so their internal clocks and compasses are not just sensed when they want to, but sometimes when they need them. Since I'm part dragon the nether messes with my internal clock and compass. The results are usually a major headache, but not always.
"After you." I gestured to the portal. They both gave me untrusting looks before walking in. I sure hope Olivia knows what she's doing.
I sighed and looked around the empty cave. By empty I mean the only thing in it was the nether portal. I felt like somebody was following us, so I took some loose stones from around the room and piled the up in mouth of the tunnel. That will at least slow them down.
After I made sure that the stones wouldn't fall on their own, I turned towards the portal. I sighed slowly walking towards it. I had to do this.
I took a deep breath in, and stepped into the portal. Purple swirls filled my vision till everything went black.
Then suddenly the knew I was here. The nether. I walked out of the portal, trying to shut off my internal compass and clock before my head ache got much worse than the minor pain I was already feeling.
I saw the others standing in a small little cave they must have made that had some ice in it. It was hot in here. I didn't bother walking into the cave to get out of this heat, instead I decided to change dragon types. Fire and lava. Orange and red. Now I couldn't feel the heat.
"Come on!" I yelled pulling out the map. I wanted to make this a quick trip. A short trip would benefit both me and Olivia.
I turned to start the walk to the nether fortress a short walk away from here. I looked over my shoulder to see Olivia and Sky running to catch up.
Let's hope this trip into the nether is the most uneventful part of our journey.
