Chapter 22

Sky's P.O.V.

'Help! Squids! I'm going to be hybrid. Won't remember. Sorry in advance... slipping...' I heard somebody yell, but their voice became weak towards the end. Wait, I knew that voice, and it sounded like it came from inside my head. So, either Jolene was in my head, or telepathy just happened. Both scared me so I decided to go check Jolene's room.

I walked through the slightly ajar door to see her bed was empty. She had said something about squids, did they come in here? It couldn't be possible, there were no signs of struggle, and the way she sounded was like she was struggling.

I flew into the air as I heard the door creak behind me. Expecting a squid, I turned around in a fighting stance, yelling at myself for leaving my budder sword in my room. I relaxed as I saw that the person entering was just Olivia, a startled Olivia now, but still Olivia.

Before either of us could do anything, a scream erupted throughout the room, the source somewhere outside the window. Both of us ran to the window that peered out at the town square in time to see Jolene's body fall from the arms of a squid hybrid. The only reason I knew it was Jolene was her dragon scale armour, otherwise I would have never known. Her hair and armour were both a squid blue, which made me shiver. Squid hybrid. She was a squid hybrid, just like she had said she was going to be.

I was about to panic, but Olivia put her hand on my back. "Adam, we might still be able to save her." She said. I nodded and ran to my room to grab my sword.

By the time we burst through the front doors of the town hall the squid and the hybrid were heading towards one of the roads. I was about to yell, but I saw Olivia motion for me to be quiet. Then I saw her slip from shadow to shadow like a ninja, only more noticeable because of the fact that she's made of pure white snow.

I followed Olivia and we somehow managed to follow the duo with Jolene to the edge of town. They stopped at the gate, so we stopped in nearby shadows to listen in on their conversation. "She'll be our most powerful warrior after we train her." The squid said. The hybrid only nodded in reply. "Thats the only part of this whole memory loss thing that's unfortunate. After all, we don't know what kinds of fighting techniques she knew. I guess it's a sacrifice we need to make in order for her not to hate squids, and possibly make it so she instead hates team crafted and the horrible monster that is Sky." As the squid said my name I could feel the hate and rage behind it. They spat my name like it was horrible.

Jolene had said something about not remembering, but hearing this only made me want to jump from the shadows and slay both the squid and the hybrid. Something held me back though, and I don't know what. All I knew was that I couldn't do anything, I could only watch as the 2 left the town without another word.

Squid Jolene's P.O.V.

I woke up on a soft bed. I smiled in comfort, until I realized one thing, I had no idea where I was, how I got there, or who I was for that matter. I sat up quite alarmed by this fact.

I looked around to see I was in something that I think is called an infirmary. I remembered the names of normal and everyday objects, but I still felt weird as I had no ties to know how I knew what they were. I don't remember anything about who I was.

I looked down at myself to see if that would help me remember anything. I wore armour that was a matching colour to my hair, they were a... I struggled to find a word to describe the colour. A squid blue, they were a squid blue.

I tried to imagine a squid, and saw one clearly in my mind's eye. Yet something was missing. I couldn't place what, but I felt there was something important about squids that I needed to know, but just couldn't remember. Thinking about squids brought 2 more words into my mind, budder, and sky. Why those words? I felt like not only did all 3 words connect, but that sky was a name and not a thing.

"Good, your up." Said a man who had the same coloured hair as me, except he wore a white lab coat. "You hit your head pretty hard while battle training. What can you remember?"

"Words, but no connections." I said, something inside of me protesting the fact that I was speak to the man. Why? The man nodded.

"Could you take the mask off for a moment?" The man asked. I nodded, only just realizing the mask that was on my face. I put my hands up and grabbed the mask. I tried to take it off but found that I couldn't.

"I can't." I told him, putting my hands down. The man frowned then told me I could go.

I got up and left. I decided I would explore. I felt that the man was lying about what had happened before I had woken up on that bed, but it could be true. If it was, then maybe wandering around here could jog my memory.

After a while of nothing I stopped to admire a painting on the wall. The painting was of a forest near some mountains. I found it strange that after wandering around these halls of what was supposedly my home, that I longed to be in the forest and climbing the mountains.

When I imagined what it was like in the forest, I saw a small building that blended in with the trees. Thinking about the mountains however made my head ache and then an image flashed through my mind. I was on a ledge along with 4 other people. 3 of them were over by horses, while I was holding on to one of them. All of the people were kind of blurry, but I felt like they were my friends. I also felt like I wasn't going to go down a mountain path like 3 of the others, but I didn't know what I was going to do. I gasped as the image faded. Was that a memory or a daydream?

I jumped as somebody placed their hand on my shoulder. "Sorry." I heard the man from before say. "We've found a way to get your memory back." He told me after glancing at the picture.

I followed him back to the room I was in before and I sat down on the bed. "How?" I asked. I was eager to remember who I was. Eager to know more about that image that had popped into my head.

"With this." The man took a needle off of a tray that someone else held out to them. I shied away from the needle, for some reason I was terrified of it. "Just breath and it will by over in a moment." The man said. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Calm.

I forced myself not to tense up as I felt the needle puncture my skin. I didn't have to do so for long as he removed the needle as quickly as it entered. I sighed, glad that that was over.

I hoped this stuff would act fast, I didn't want to wait long to remember what happened before waking up.
