You're jolted out of a deep sleep, your tank top slightly dampened with sweat. The sound of crashing thunder fills your ears. You look around, giving your eyes a minute to adjust to the darkness. It registers in your mind that you're safe in your motel room, and Sam—your husband— is asleep right next to you. You listen to the rhythm of his breathing, which is barely audible over the raging storm going on outside. You look up at the ceiling, listening to the rain pound angrily on the roof. As a bright flash of lighting illuminates the room, a dark memory flashes in your mind. You shake your head, as if trying to get rid of it. You close your eyes and try to fine a more comfortable position. Unable to go back to sleep, you sit up and wrap your arms around your bended knees. You don't want to wake Sam, so you sit as still as possible. Each crack of thunder, makes you shudder. All you can think about is that one night, ten years ago, when your life changed forever. You feel the bed shift, bringing you out of your daze.
"Hey. You okay?" Sam asks, in a deep and sleepy voice.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
Another flash of lightning shines light on Sam's face, showing a concerned look. He sits up, and turns on the lamp that sits on the bedside table. You can't help but smile at his tousled hair.
"It's okay." He assures you.
He presses his lips against your shoulder, and kisses it. You can feel the warmth coming off of his bare chest.
"What's wrong?" He asks, his voice affectionate.
You hesitate for a moment before answering,"It's the storm. It just brings back memories."
"The night you lost your brother?"
You look at him and nod. A tear threatens to fall down your cheek, and he wipes it away with his thumb.
"Come here." He says, pulling you closer to him. You move over and sit in between his legs. His arms come around you and rest on your stomach. You let out a small sigh as Sam places a light kiss on your neck. "It might help to get it all out."
You want to tell him more than anything. He will be more than willing to share the burden, but you haven't told a single soul since it happened. It will be hard to talk about, but you know Sam, and he wants to help you carry it, even if he doesn't say so.
"Look, if you don't want to tell me, that's okay. I just love you and don't want you to bear it alone."
You really love this man with all of your heart. He's the best thing that ever happened to you. You never thought you'd settle down with anyone, yet when the Winchesters took you in, that all changed. Slowly but surely, you fell for Sam.
"It's okay," you finally say, "I'll tell you."
He arms tighten around you, and you almost break down and cry. In order to stop yourself from doing just that, you swallow hard and begin.
"On a summer night in July, ten years ago, my brother and I went on a camping trip. We had just gotten done with a pretty big hunt, and needed a little vacation. Our tents were across from each other with a fire pit in between us. I was almost asleep, and I guess he left his tent to...you know...nature called. That's when I heard it." You stop, not sure if you have enough strength to finish.
"What did you hear?" He asks, putting a steady arm around your shoulder.
"A gunshot."
Sam closes his eyes, his eyebrows furrowed in sadness. You get control your breathing and continue.
"I instinctively grabbed  my gun and peeked out of my tent through a small opening in the zipper. I heard the snap of a twig, and a figure appeared. A figure that wasn't my brother. He was rummaging through our stuff. It didn't take an idiot to find out what happened. I was able to put two and two together. Why that man shot my brother, I'll never know."
Sam rubs your shoulder with his thumb and takes your hand in his. "Then what happened?"
"I quietly thumbed back the hammer of my .45, and lied in wait. I watched him walk towards my tent. As soon as my zipper opened, the bastard saw me. Before he could even reach for his weapon, I pointed my gun at his head and pulled the trigger."
Tears started to come fast now, and you didn't bother to stop them. Sam strokes your hair and rubs your back.
"When I found him, he was d-dead. As I was standing over his lifeless body, it started to storm out of nowhere. The rain was pouring on me, but I didn't even feel it. All I knew was that someone put a bullet in my brothers chest. All of the creatures my brother hunted, and he goes out by some guy with a gun."
He lays back down, pulling you with him. You lay your head on his chest and put an arm around his waist. In this moment, you feel safe. Listening to the sound of Sam's beating heart gave you a sense of peace.
"Ever since then, I've felt so alone, and I've hated storms."
He rests his head on yours. "Shh" He soothes.
"Listen to me," He says, rubbing your arm, "you're not alone anymore. You have me now."
You pull your head back slightly so you could look at him. Deep down inside, you know he can't promise to never leave you, and you understand that. I guess that's why it's good to have a life with another hunter, because a hunter's life span is unpredictable. You knew that the moment you said I do.
"I'm lucky to have you, Sam Winchester."
He turns, tucking you beneath him, but still keeps an arm under your head. He caresses your face with his hand and rubs his thumb on your cheek. "Not as lucky as I am." He says before pressing his lips to yours.
