Tyler is six and Joshua is eight. Tyler is dressed up as a vampire and Joshua was dressed up as the infamous Spider-man.
Tyler has been begging his mom to take him trick-or-treating from the very minute he dashed through the front door, immediately beginning to yell choruses of "c'mon, Mom! Let's go! It's candy time! We needa hurry or else all the good candy will be gone!" His entire being is bursting with the excitement that only comes from youthful innocence and one too many Reese's peanut butter cups.
He's been home for at least an hour now, but Kelly is still in the kitchen doing whatever it is mom's seem to find more important than taking their children Trick-or-Treating, so that way they can fill their pillowcases to the brim with candy corn, M&M's, and king-sized candy bars (those are rare, but this year he knows exactly which houses give them out. He's more than prepared).
The little bit of patience he has is wearing thin and Tyler is about to storm into the kitchen with that fierce little look of determination in his eyes, but before he can, the doorbell rings and he races over to it. He's finally tall enough to reach the lock now, and he turns it with ease, his tiny fingers only shaking slightly. He can't help it though, he's just so excited. He knows this means he gets to give out candy. This also means that he gets to see all the brilliant costumes and be the reason for the smile on someone else's face.
And maybe he should be a bit jealous that kids are already getting their candy when he hasn't even started out on his own journey, but he's actually not. He's not at all bothered because this day is just so lively and nothing and no one can really change that.
Once he finally manages to fling the door open, the first thing he sees is red. His tilts his head up, eyes widening when he realizes there is a superhero standing at his door. And not just any superhero. No, this is Spider-man, a.k.a. the best superhero in Tyler's opinion.
"Trick or Treat!" comes the slightly high-pitched exclamation.
"Happy Halloween!" Tyler shouts back. His sweet dimples are prominent and his brown eyes are glimmering.
He just stares at the boy in front of him for a few moments. Tyler is shorter than him, which can only mean that the boy must be a little bit older than Tyler. It doesn't bother him at all, really. In fact he believes he's pretty cool, even if they've only exchanged five words to each other. Now, Tyler is a firm believer of anyone who dresses up in such a cool costume is pretty okay as far as the small boy is concerned.
After he's been staring for a few moments he realizes the boy is probably getting a bit impatient, so Tyler quickly grabs the huge pumpkin bowl he'd helped his mother stuff full of candy last night. He shoves it at the boy, a proud smile on his lips. "We have Reese's and Kit-Kats and Twix, and we even have king-sized Hershey's bars!"
