Joshua had just gotten home from a rather rough night out of partying, drinking, and girls, clumsily unlocking his door to find Tyler sitting on their couch with multiple bags of luggage surrounding him. Joshua blundered in, laughing at the fact that he's constantly tripping over his feet before glancing up, seeing his boyfriend of three years with a indignant expression on his face.
"T-Ty?" Joshua slurred, slamming the front door shut behind him. Tyler didn't miss a beat, standing up and looking around him, as if checking for a lost item. "What are you doing up?" Joshua surprised himself at his alert tone, suddenly feeling a bit more sober as he caught on to the tension in the room. It was at least midnight; Tyler should be warm, lying in their bed.
"Why're you drunk, Joshua?" Tyler shot back tiredly, eventually looking up to meet Joshua's dizzy gaze. Joshua took in Tyler's state, bundled up in an array of clothing with his classic black jeans and thick black hoodie to match. Yes, it was the middle of November, but it was a bit much for a night in, in Joshua's opinion.
It took the curly haired boy several more seconds to comprehend what Tyler had spoke to him, and by the time he came up with a decent answer, Tyler was already gathering up his many bags with a slow shake of his head.
"Are you going to your mom's house? That's a bit much, don't you think, Tyler? It kinda seems like you were-"
"Leaving." Tyler finished for him, looking up once more to meet Joshua's eyes. "I'm leaving." Joshua was more than alert now, his drunken sway coming to a halt under Tyler's expectant gaze. "I'm leaving, Joshua."
"Leaving?" Joshua repeated, unaware of what Tyler really meant. "To go where? Why didn't you tell me? I could've gone with you! It's about time we went on vacation, Ty! The Bahamas sounds nice, yeah?" Joshua smiled at Tyler, opening his mouth to continue but stopping himself when he was cut off with a loud sigh from Tyler.
"No, Joshua. I'm leaving. I'm going to stay somewhere else until I can get a place of my own." Joshua just stared at his lover.
"Don't give me that look, Joshua. We both knew this was coming! We both knew this wasn't working out no matter how much time we spent pretending everything was okay, especially when we both knew nothing actually was. You've been drifting away from me for some time now, Joshua, and I'm tired." Tyler said, the look in his eyes loyal to his words.
"Then go to sleep if you're tired! I mean, it's only logical." Joshua spoke, his voice soft as if his brain wasn't taking in this new information. Tyler let out a frustrated groan.
"I'm leaving you, Joshua! Do you hear me? I'm done with this, we're not okay, and we can't work through it. Unless rough patches in relationships last eight months, I'm tired of trying. I'm tired of trying for the both of us; effort for two is harder than it looks. You don't even attempt to-"
"I do try!" Joshua argued. Tyler scoffed, "coming home completely fucking smashed every night isn't trying, Joshua."
"Who knows how many whores you've fucked this past week! God forbid you-"
"They're not whores." Joshua growled before he realized what he was saying, curling into himself when he did. "I mean; I haven't had anyone besides you."
Tyler dropped his head, fighting back the tears that threatened to escape. "Joshua, it's the fact you can look me in the eye," Tyler raised his head. "And lie so easily, is disgusting."
Tyler had to bite back a laugh, settling for vicious words. "It's the fact that you can tell me that you haven't fucked a different fucking chick every night this week, when you come home smelling like a different fucking perfume every time. It's the fact that you can just give me these buildups, when you claim to love me, is repulsive." Tyler moved closer to his now ex-boyfriend, slightly repelled by yet another scent laced on Joshua's sweatshirt. "It's sick."
"Tyler," Joshua's eyes followed Tyler's movements, a flash of hurt flying through his brown orbs that only fueled Tyler on more. Tyler moved as close to Joshua as he could without becoming physically sick. "You make me sick." Tyler spat; newly found hatred swimming in those mocha-colored eyes that Joshua had grown and learned to love. "You make me fucking sick, Joshua."
"T-Tyler," Joshua whispered, the hurt making its painful way down to his voice, his tone cracking in breaking and all the wrong places.
"And I can't stand to be with you." Tyler continued, ignoring Joshua's silent pleas. The two stared at each other for a long moment with very different gazes before Tyler stepped back, moving towards his luggage to drape one bag over his shoulder, and another over the other, uncomfortably picking up the last two to roll behind him towards the door before awkwardly reaching towards the unlocked door to pull it open. "Tyler, please." Joshua's voice still hadn't raised above a whisper.
Tyler fought back the urge to turn right back around and hug the boy, tell him it was alright and he didn't need to feel as broken as Joshua was. But from the look in those brown eyes, it almost seemed as if it was truly okay, and they could try to work through this again, together.
Tyler wanted to tell Joshua that he loved him, tell him not to cry because Tyler was still here. He wanted to tell him that he wasn't really leaving, that he wasn't really walking out of the older boy's life without the impulse to come back.
But he couldn't, and Tyler lost the comforting urge the second he stepped through the doorframe. Tyler spoke over his shoulder as he continued down their apartment hallway, his voice echoing off of the pale walls.
"I'll be back to get the rest of my stuff tomorrow, but I'm staying at Chris's until I get my own place. I'll tell the crew tomorrow as well, along with management, but in the meantime, don't fuck up anymore than you already have."
Tyler got to the end of the hallway, Joshua's legs stuck to the floor as if he was glued down, speechless as he watched the scene before him coming to a close. "Don't let this control your life. Get over me. Move on." Tyler said, glancing at the other boy as Joshua's tears finally began trickling down his cheeks.
There was a soft ding as the elevator doors opened, and Joshua watched as Tyler maneuver himself inside before peeking his head out. "Don't come over. Forget about me, yeah?"
And with that, the love of his life was gone.
"Tyler," Joshua said again, blinking at the empty hallway before slowly turning around back towards their - sorry, his - apartment, taking in the emptiness without Tyler's stuff lying around like it usually was.
It took a moment, but Joshua eventually managed to close the door and shuffle into their once shared bedroom before falling onto the bed, breathing in the scent that was no longer his.
And so Joshua laid there, sobbing uncontrollably with a numb mind before he fell asleep, fully clothed and permanently pained.
