Chapter Seventeen - Ryan
"Maybe our favorite quotations say more about us than about the stories and people we're quoting."

Ryan
Those curves, that infinity belly button ring, her soft skin, the water running down her chest and between her breasts that were covered by her arms, the tattoo sequence on her side that was uncovered and for me to see...
"Ryan."
My head snapped up and I looked to my left to see Skylar narrowing her eyes at me, "What?"
She rolled her eyes and pointed to the waiter standing at the foot of our table. "Order."
I sighed and glanced over my menu again before looking back at the Waiter. "I'll have the chicken."
He nodded and wrote it down on his notebook and smiled, "Okay, that'll be out soon."
After he walked away, the table became quiet. There was an awkward silence that I wanted to break, but couldn't because I couldn't find any words to speak.
All I could think about was Skylar.
"So." Claire cleared her throat and clasped her hands together on the wooden table. "How are you?"
Skylar picked at her nails and rolled her eyes, "Fine until you showed up."
"Well, I'm doing great, thanks," Skylar rolled her eyes again and leaned back against her chair, "Of course you are."
"So." Madelyn leaned on the table across from me and rested her head in her hands. "Why haven't we met yet?"
"Because we live on opposite sides of the country. And, you're almost five years younger than me."
"I'm 18 though."
I sighed and shook my head, "Never mind, you're younger than I thought you were."
She stuck out her bottom lip in what I assumed was supposed to be a sexy pout, but it didn't work for her. "How old are you?"
I rolled my eyes, "Way older than you."
She opened her mouth to speak again, but she was interrupted by a bang on the table, shaking our drinks and making the ice rattle. "Do not bring him into this conversion."
Madelyn and I snapped our heads over to see Skylar leaning over the table in an angry stance with her eyes narrowed. "You can't just blame my upbringing on him because you were to busy with your perfect family to give me the fucking time of day."
"I'm sorry that I had to take care of another child after your father left and I couldn't spend all of my time waiting on you hand and foot. Madelyn had a life that needed to be taken seriously. She couldn't just go off whenever and do whatever it was that you did, she devoted her life to softball."
Skylar let out a bitter laugh and closed her eyes, "If you would've taken enough time to spare me a glance, you would've seen that I had a passion, it just want a sport our shopping. Did you not notice me away from the house all the time, or did you just not care enough to ask where I went after school every day?"
"Don't you feed me that 'my mommy neglected me' bullshit, I paid plenty attention to you throughout these years, I'm sorry that you couldn't be the attention whore you were as a child." Claire sneered.
I almost gasped for affect, but I found that inappropriate. How could a mother say something like that to her child? "Attention whore? Really? You think that the only reason that I'm doing this is for attention?"
