I stared at my hand that was 6 inches away from the wooden door in front of me, mid-knock, thinking over why I was here.
Why was I here anyway?
I could go anywhere.
Okay, that was a lie. The only three places I could go are my mom's, Genesis's, and Luke's.
I couldn't go to Gen's, my mom was on the other side of the country, and I couldn't go to Luke's. He's done enough for me over the years that I couldn't bring myself to ask him to help me out even more.
Before I could talk myself out of it, the front door opened.

Seven hours earlier
We finished loading up and I put a hand on my hip while the other hand wiped the sweat off my forehead. "I'm exhausted." I muttered while looking over at Genesis and Ryan.
They nodded in agreement. "Who knew two days of riding can beat you up?" Gen offered while walking over to my truck and opening the door to the back.
"How about I drive back." I looked to my right and raised an eyebrow at Ryan, "You expect me to let you drive my baby?"
He shrugged, "I know you didn't get much sleep last night. It's the least I could do."
It was true. He had brought up one of my favorite TV shows, How I Met Your Mother, and commented that the 7th season was on Netflix, so I brought it up on my phone and watched the entire 7th season last night, resulting in almost no sleep. "C'mon, you know that you just want to sleep on the way home instead of drive for four and a half hours."
I sighed and rubbed a hand over my face, "Fine." Ryan smiled and held out a hand for my lanyard and I dropped them into his palm hesitantly. "But if I see even a tiny scratch on this." I patted the side of my truck, "Then you're dead."
He smiled and nodded, "I understand."
And then, over Ryan's shoulder, I saw Adam walking over to us, smiling at his phone.
I know what you're thinking; what's the big deal? Maybe a friend texted him a funny joke.
But, for the past month, Adam has been suspiciously protective over his phone. When Genesis and him started dating, he didn't have a lock on his phone. Now, his phone is locked and Adam refuses to give the password to her. Whenever he gets a text, he would absentmindedly step slightly away from Genesis so his phone was out of her view. I wanted to ask Genesis about it, but the last time I brought something about Adam up, she went crazy.
"What's up guys?"
Speaking of the devil.
I smiled at Adam, "You ready?" he nodded and Ryan nudged him, "You can sit shot gun."
