Scene 7 A: Maria's bedroom - A Week Later, Night

(The Grand Waltz is playing. CHILDREN are getting ready. GRETL is practicing her curtsey for Frau SCHMIDT)

Schmidt:

No... Yes! And you must do that for all the guests! Come along children, the party is starting!

Marta:

Frau Schmidt, will you fix my bow? We've never had a party in our house before!

Schmidt:

Oh yes, there used to be lots of parties here!

Liesl:

Yes! Friedrich and I used to sneak out and watch them from the top of the stairs.

Friedrich:

I remember the music!

Schmidt:

Once your father brought a gypsy orchesta all the way from Budapest!

Liesl:

Yes! They wore red coats.

Schmidt:

Oh, go ahead children... and mind your manners. Come along!

(SCHMIDT, MARTA, and GRETL exit)

Friedrich:

I remember beautiful ladies and everybody laughng!

Louisa:

There was one lady, the most beautiful of all I thnk she wa here all the time...

Liesl:

Yes, Louisa.

Brigitta:

Can we dance while the guests are dancing?

Liesl:

Well, yes of course! Remember what Freulein Maria told us?

All:

(Yes, I remember, etc.)

Liesl:

Ready, curtsey...

Friedrich:

...and bow...

(They practice dancing. Liesl looks out the window)



Scene 7 B: The Von Trapp courtyard

(GUESTS are dancing the Grand Waltz around the fountain. Music ends. Landler begins. Herr ZELLER approaches Baron ELBERFELD with BARONESS ELBERFELD and FRAU ZELLER close behind)

Zeller:

You have German blood, haven't you?

Eberfield:

I am not a German! I'm an Austrian.

(CAPTAIN steps outside and talks to BRIGITTA and KURT who enter along)

Captain:

It's much more pleasant on the terrace.

Zeller:

There's going to be Anschluss. I warn you and everyone like you and that goes for all-

(FRAU ZELLER pulls Herr ZELLER aside CAPTAIN steps forward)
