(AUDIENCE applauds. MAX enters.)
Max:
Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you. Just a moment. I have an announcement that concerns you. Ladies and Gentleman, the festival concert has reached it’s conclusion. Except of course, we don’t know what that conclusion is going to be! The judges are putting their heads together to arrive at their decision, and while we are waiting, I think there should be an encore!
(AUDIENCE applaudes)
It seems this may be the last opportunity the Von Trapp Family will have to sing together for a long, long time. I have just been informed that the captain is leaving immediately, after the concert for his new command in the naval forces of the third reich.
(AUDIENCE whispers among themselves)
A guard of honor has arrived to escort him directly from the hall to the naval base at Bremerhaven. And now Ladies and Gentlemen, The Family Von Trapp, again.
(AUDIENCE applaudes. Music in.)
Maria:
There's a sad sort of clanging from the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say "cuckoo"
Children:
Cuckoo, cuckoo
Captain: Children:
Regretfully they tell us (Cuckoo, cuckoo)
But firmly they compel us (Cuckoo, cuckoo)
To say goodbye . . . (Cuckoo)
Von Trapp Family:
to you
(Once children sing their parts, they exit)
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night
Marta & Kurt:
We hate to go and miss this pretty sight
Remaining Von Trapp Family:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu
Friedrich & Liesl:
Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu
Remaining Von Trapp Family:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Brigitta & Louisa:
We flit, we float, we fleetly flee, we fly
Remaining Von Trapp Family:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Gretl:
The sun has gone to bed and so must I
Goodbye
Maria:
Goodbye
Captain:
Goodbye
Maria & Captain:
Goodbye
(All VON TRAPPs have exited. AUDIENCE applaudes.)
Max:
Ladies and Gentlemen, I have here the decision of our distinguished judges. We will start with the third award… For this honor, the judges have named… The trio of the Sandbouga Sanpegan.
(AUDIENCE applaudes. Fanfare plays. TRIO of women approaches the stage and bows.)
Ah, the second award has been given to… Freulein Schrieger, the first soloist of the choir of St. Agatha’s Church in Mervark.
(AUDIENCE applaudes. Fanfare plays. SCHRIEGER approaches the stage, bows, and blows kisses many times.)
And the first prize… the highest musical honor in the Austmarque… goes too… The Family Von Trapp!
(AUDIENCE applaudes. Fanfare plays.)
The Family Von Trapp!
(Audience applaudes. Fanfare plays. Soldiers look around. Herr ZELLER approaches the stage.)
Zeller:
They’re gone!
(Underscoring -So Long Farewell/Edelweiss- aggressively plays out. All begin to run out of the theater. MAX is taken off by NAZIs. Chaos is among the AUDIENCE.)
