Chant

Scene 10 B: A small room in the abbey

(MOTHER Abbess, BERTHE, MARGARETTA, and SOPHIA are getting MARIA ready)

Maria:

Reverend Mother, have I permission to look at myself in the mirror? I brought one, it's in my suitcase.

Mother:

Sister Berthe?

(BERTHE pulls out the wedding dress linings)

Berthe:

Sister Margaretta!

Margaretta:

I don't think she had time to put in the linings.

Mother:

Sister Berthe, the mirror, please.

(The mirror is given to MARIA who looks at herself)

Maria:

Oh Reverend Mother, I look-

Mother:

Don't be vain my daughter! Let me say it for you...

(MOTHER puts back the mirror)

You look beautiful!

(As the Nuns sing, they do the finishing touches on MARIA's dress)

Nuns:

Chant

Scene 10 C: The abbey chapel

(Maria walks down the aisle followed by BERTHE, MARGARETTA, SOPHIA, and MOTHER Abbess. The nuns surround them)

Nuns:

How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?

How do you find a word that means Maria?

A flibberti gibbet!

A willo' the wisp!

A clown!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her,

Many a thing she ought to understand.

But how do you make her stay

And listen to all you say,

How do you keep a wave upon the sand?

(MARIA joins the CAPTAIN)

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?

How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

(MARIA and the CAPTAIN approach the BISHOPS and the DEACON who begins to marry them)
