I laughed at his face. We've been talking for over an hour and mum hasn't come home yet.
"Didn't you say you're mum was supposed to be home a good twenty minutes ago?" His eyebrow arched up, making his features more define.
"Yeah. I should message her." I grabbed the tabloid and messaged my mum, while I heard shuffling coming from the speakers.
Hi, mum. You said you'd be home twenty minutes ago. Is everything alright?- Keira
I switched back to the video chat, seeing his big brown eyes staring intently at the screen. His long eyelashes framed his chocolate eyes that sparkle in the lighting.
I brought myself back and cleared my throat. "Um, I just messaged her."
He straightened himself up. "Hope she messages back, yeah?" He scratched the back of his neck.
"Yeah." I looked around my room wandering over the white familiar surroundings. My eyes landed on the leather material peeking through my satchel. I stood up and went over to it.
I sat down with the journal in my lap as I flipped the pages. My eyes landed on a page towards the end. Skimming through it, I found it really interesting. I could feel Alek's gaze through the tabloid screen.
16.12.2115
He says they're killers. And I didn't believe him. Her parents killed mine and many other people. They were both sentenced to jail for their whole lives for being serial killers. I know deep down inside, Genevieve isn't like them. She can't.
I'm sitting in my so-called 'room' in Uncle Fredger's house. After mother died of the 'car accident' caused by Ms. Jann, Uncle Fredger took me in, as he was the legal guardian that I had. He says she's one of them too. But I won't buy it. She's nothing like them. She's different.
Astin
My face creased with each and every line I read. My grandparents are serial killers? And mother...what could she be doing right now? I flipped through the pages, only to see blank ones. My heart stopped. What if mother... no. I can't let that go to my head. She's always been there for me. She couldn't have done something like that.
I tugged at the ends of my hair. "She couldn't have done it." A voice brought me back. I turned to see that I was still being recorded through the screen of my tabloid. What is he-- "You were accidentally reading it out loud."
I blushed. Was I really? "You know your mother would never do anything like that. As for all the times you've talked about her, she's never sounded like the one to harm anyone."
Looking back at the page, it was written about nine months before I was born. I accidentally dropped the journal onto my lap when I heard a loud slam of the door.
"I better go. Bye Alek." I gave him a small smile then ended the call. I stashed the journal into my satchel and went to the kitchen where my mother was.
"Um. Evening mum. Came home late again from work, huh?" She tensed up.
"Yeah. They kept me for a few hours." She went through the fridge. I took the bowl of the leftover meal I made and handed it to her. "Thank you." She gave a tired smile.
"Mum, what ever happened to grandma and grandpa?" I asked. She tensed at my words.
"They um, died." She stuffed her mouth with a spoonful if the food.
"Mum." I said sternly. I regained myself. "Are they really? How?"
"They died of a stroke."
"Both of them?"
"Yes."
"Did they have high blood pressure that must've caused--"
"They're in prison." She rested her head in her hand. "They're in prison."
I scrunched my face. "Why?"
"They...murdered people." She went back to eating.
"Oh."
The room was filled with silence as the light shown down, casting a shadow over mum's small figure.
"I'll turn the water heater on for you, m'kay? I'll be going off to bed now." I went over to her and gave her a light kiss on the temple. "G'night mum."
I went to the bathroom and turned on the water heater. I walked into mum's room and grabbed a pair of pajama pants and tee shirt for her. I hung it up in the bathroom wall and went to brush my teeth.
Tomorrow is Keira's birthday.
The blue letters popped onto the screen. It rippled away as I washed my face and dried it off. I'm walked into my room and collapsed into the comforting bed. I pulled the duvet overtop of me and took my tabloid out. My finger hovered over the call button.
"Hmm?" He husky voice echoed through the screen. He rubbed his eyes, causing his inked biceps to flex.
"Oh did I wake you?" I forgot about the time zone difference.
"No it's fine. What is it you wanted to talk about?" He said in between yawns.
"She says it's true." I whispered. "I mean not directly but she said it indirectly that what was written in it was true and that they did indeed kill people but she never really said that they killed his parents in particular so I'm not so sure that part is true."
"Breathe." He chuckled at my rambling. "Just don't pressure her. She'll tell you when she thinks your ready."
"You're nothing like he said." I mumbled.
"What was that?" He scrunched his face. "I'm nothing like who said?"
"Oh, uh nothing."
"Oh." His eyelids started to slowly close, but fluttered open, revealing his deep chocolate eyes.
"You should get some sleep. Sorry for waking you up." I looked down at myself nervously.
"No worries, love. Sweet dreams. G'night Keira." He whispered and smiled, showing his perfect jawline and his tongue sticking out a bit.
"G'night Alek." I ended the call with a smile on my face. My eyes fluttered closed as the image of him smiling appeared in my head.
