"Because They could be listening in. They always do." I said cautiously. It's the only reason They're able to control us so well. But they couldn't control us-not our family.
Chloe sighed. "When will we be able to fish without being so scared? I mean, this has to stop. The sharks have to go away eventually."
"We all want that, Chloe. But there's not much we can do." My mom said sympathetically.
We were silent for a while.
"I'm done. May I go now?" Chloe said.
"Sure." My dad said.
"May I go too?" I asked.
"Yes." My dad said.
So we got up, put our dishes away, and went to our rooms.
Chloe shut her door so I just went in my room and lay on my bed. I thought about everything that had happened that day. I didn't exactly put two and two together at the time. But, on that day, I did know one thing: Rick knew something and I was going to find out what. Had he threatened Chloe? No, he didn't have any reason to anyways. Of course, he could do it to get back at me. He knew that I would never let Chloe do anything stupid.
But I just sat there that night, thinking. I was excited but also nervous. I'm not usually nervous. But what Rick said kept bothering me. A few minutes later, my dad explained how a full moon really affects portals in the ocean. It was just as dangerous as Rick had said. He asked me why I wanted to know.
"Oh, you know, so I don't do anything stupid," I replied.
"Ok. Good night, Seth." He said.
"Night, Dad."
He left and I went to sleep. But I wasn't asleep for long thanks to Chloe. I heard a knock at my door at about two in the morning. I groggily got up and went to open the door, already knowing who was there.
"Come in, Chloe." I knew that it had to be her.
She walked in and sat next to me. She was wearing jeans and a T-shirt. That night, I wasn't fully aware of anything. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. There was something she wanted-I just knew it.
She said, "Will you go somewhere with me?"
"Where's 'somewhere,' exactly?" I asked her.
She hesitated. "The ocean."
"Why do you want to go there?" I asked, trying to keep my cool.
"I just...I just want to see it. We-I haven't been in so long..." She said.
I raised an eyebrow. "Are you-?"
"No, I'm not. Please come with me."
"Ok, let me put some regular clothes on."
So I put some jeans on and we snuck out.
The streets were vacant. But there were lights everywhere. Curfew for everyone was at midnight or so. But that meant adults too. We went through a thick forest. My face kept getting scratched. I was hoping that the scars would not be too noticeable at school tomorrow.
Chloe and I were almost there. But then I saw a cop's hovercar passing by. I shoved Chloe to the ground and got down somewhat on top of her. She didn't protest, not even when he was gone. I was confused but didn't say anything.
She finally said, "Thanks. That was a close one."
I just nodded. "Uh-huh. Let's keep going."
When we finally got there, I followed Chloe into the water. Both of us could swim. But all Chloe did was stand in knee-length water. I went in with her, still not knowing what was going on.
