"Are you Chloe's friend?" They asked harshly.
"Yeah..." I said.
I remember that they grabbed me and I was hauled into the kitchen.
I didn't put on my "guilty" face because I wasn't guilty of anything. Well, except for letting Chloe get Lost. But that was not entirely my fault. They sat me down on the couch. My dad had a straight face on. I didn't know who called the cops. How had they known so fast? Who told them?
When I tried to get up, some cop shoved me back down.
"You ain't goin' anywhere, kid." He said in a gruff voice.
"But I didn't do anything wrong." I said.
"That's what they all say." He turned around as if to guard me.
Then, I heard Chloe's voice in my head: Seth! You have to come quick!
I was a bit surprised when I first heard her. Then I remembered that we had a special telepathy between each other.
I replied: What happened?
She said: I'm very deep inside. The walls are black. The air smell like soot.
I replied: I'll come as soon as I can. My house is flooded with cops. Could you show me where you are?
There was a brief silence. Then I got an image in my head. Chloe was standing in this giant room. It was all black with skulls all around the walls. There were small fires everywhere. There were cries of people-kids.
I said: Ok, I'll come ASAP.
I heard her one last time: Hurry!
And our connection was broken.
I rubbed my forehead. All that had given me a headache. I looked all around. Cops were still talking to my parents. I knew that Chloe was in grave danger now. It was worse than I thought. I pulled her note out. I read it again. Could it be some kind of clue? I thought. No, there was no indication of anything specific.
A cop came up to me and said, "Ok, son. Let's see what you have to say."
I said nothing. He picked me up by the arm and sat me down at our kitchen table. This was so wrong. All I wanted to do was run. Sadly, I was trapped.
"Now, did you suspect that Chloe would up and disappear?" He asked me.
"No, I didn't." I lied.
I remember that in her note she said, "Please lie for me." I had to. This was my best friend. So I lied, but not too much. I made sure that I sounded legit. I knew that if the cops found out that I had lied, then I would be in huge trouble. But I didn't care.
He asked me all sorts of questions and I lied about every single one. I had to protect Chloe as much as I could. When we were done with all that, they talked with my parents some more. I went up into my room and started packing. I got a backpack and found some new clothes as well. They were all black or regular blue jeans. I wrote a note to my parents saying,
Hey, Mom and Dad. Please don't worry about me. I've gone fishing with Chloe. I'm gonna find her as soon as I can. Don't worry; I'll be back. Once you read this, destroy it.
Love you guys,
Seth
I put the note under their pillows and waited for night to come. I spent all day planning and investigating onwhere Chloe could be. Iwas so tired that I took a good three hour nap at about seven or so. I changed into some black clothes. I didn't want to be seen. I packed a bow, a lot of arrows, and two daggers. I was going to be as prepared as I could possibly be.
At about midnight, I snuck out of the house and went to the beach where Chloe was last seen. What I had not expected was for Rick to be there. He had a backpack too. Is he going camping or something? He came towards me.
"I heard what happened." He says.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"You'll need my help. I know you don't trust me, but you don't have any other options."
"Why are you helping me?"
He hesitated. "A few years ago, my brother Traveled during a full moon. I never found him. Now's my chance. Plus I kind of know how you feel."
"Fine. But any funny business and you're on your own."
"Ok."
So I made a portal and concentrated on Chloe. I concentrated on where I saw her last. In an instant, we were there. This dimension was huge. This place was an extremely deep dimension. I could tell. The sky was a dark gray and the ground was pitch-black. There was fire everywhere. The air smelled like soot and everywhere we looked, there was smoke and fire. This place looked like hell only with less fire. Was it some sort of mine? No, in the Dimensional Vortex, they didn't need coal...did they? I did not know as much as I thought I did.
Oh Chloe, I thought, what have you gotten into this time? We have gotten into trouble before but this...this was a completely new level. I had never been that deep in the Dimensional Vortex before, and it was slightly frightening. To put it simply, we were in a really deep hole with little hope of getting back in one piece.
We explored briefly and cautiously. There was not much to look at except for a few mountains. After a while, (I'm not sure how long exactly) we made camp. We didn't talk. We knew that this was not going to be easy. Little did we know just how hard it was really going to be...
