There is an exploit in Gen 1 where you can use a Ditto to trick a regular Pokémon into using Transform, causing them to turn into a Ditto. This exploit works with Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Spearow and Fearow as they're the only wild Pokémon that knows the move Mirror Move. Therefore, if the player catches any of these Pokémon that has used Transform, instead they will obtain a Ditto.
This can only occur if your Ditto successfully uses Transform while during the same turn the Pokémon uses Mirror Move, the Pokémon will transform into the Ditto forever.
