Purugly is based on a wild Tiger Cat, though it's appearance is closer to an overweight tabby cat. It may also be based on Nekomata. Which are a kind of cat told about in folklore. And there are two very different types, the beast that lives in the mountains, and the ones raised domestically that grow old and transform.
