CHAPTER 3

Surprise!

"Surprise is the greatest gift which life can grant us." ~Boris Pasternak

The next couple of months were fairly ordinary; I went to school, hung out with my friends, went to cheerleading practice. My life kind of fell into a routine. I started uploading videos every Friday. I enjoyed making them, and I kind of liked the new attention I was receiving.

Like I said before, everything was normal. Until one day.

It started out normal- I woke up, got ready for school, checked my social media, etc. When I checked my email, I saw that I had gotten a message from an unfamiliar address. Curious, I opened it. It happened to be from a record company, and they seemed to be interested in me. At dinner that night, I talked to my parents about the email, and they said they wanted to check it out.

So, more waiting. I was anxious all the time, desperate for some kind of information about what was going on, but my parents refused to tell me anything. Finally, on the Friday before May, I got an answer. I had been signed!

Things were a bit stressful at this point. I had to leave my school, and my friends, behind and start online school. Balancing school and singing was just not possible at this point. The only option was to continue online, so I did what I had to do.

Really, the only thing I was doing right now was meeting with different songwriters and writing a variety of songs for my debut album. I was beyond excited. I never dreamed this would be happening, but it was.

But I was far from success. Since I didn't have any music out, I didn't have many fans, other than the ones I had gained from YouTube. I wanted to release a single, but at the same time, I didn't want to feel pressured to release an album faster than I was ready for. It had to be great. It had to be better than great. It had to be perfect.

I was in a whole different world now. I wasn't just the smart, nerdy girl in high school who could sing a little. I was in the world of popstars and paparazzi. Everything I did was being judged by the whole world, and I couldn't mess this up. This was my one chance.

After I finished my songwriting, recording, and schoolwork for the day, I was approached by one of the people that worked for the company. I think his name was John.

"Hi, Katie. Sit down, I have some news," he said.

"What's up?" I asked.

"Well, we've sent out some of your recorded material to see if it would get a positive response from some of the biggest companies."

"And?"

"And, you're going on tour. You're opening for some band. I don't really know all of the information, but I have it here in this folder to look over. I understand that you were worried about the pressure of finishing your album, but you will have plenty of time. You already have most of the songs, now we just need to record them. Well, look it over and let us know what you think!" John said. He handed me the folder and then walked away.

I opened the folder and started reading. I couldn't believe it. I was actually going on tour with-... Wait, did I read that right? It says I am going on tour with... No, this is impossible. I couldn't believe it! I was going on tour with Restless Road!
