Chapter 6

The Beginning

"Getting to know someone is like investigating a crime scene where the culprit is constantly allowed to rearrange the evidence." ~Adnan Mithani

I opened up the door on the passenger side of Zach's truck and hopped in. I was pretty sure it was going to be awkward, I mean we hardly even talked at dinner. I gave him the address of my hotel, and he started driving.

"You know, I'm staying across the street from you," he said.

"Interesting."

"You don't talk much, do you?" Zach asked.

"Sometimes."

"So, tell me about you," he said.

"What do you want to know?" I asked.

"I don't know, um, what sports do you play, how long have you been singing, do you have a boyfriend, which one of us is your favorite..." he trailed off.

"Cheerleading, since I was little, no, and I'm not telling," I replied.

"Wow, you really don't talk. Care to elaborate?" he asked with a smile.

"Not really, but you seem nice so okay. I started dancing when I was three, and that led to sideline cheerleading, which led to all-star cheerleading, and then I kind of fell in love and have been in it ever since. I've always liked music. I started watching American Idol when I was three, and I loved Kelly Clarkson and she was my idol forever. I didn't really start singing until 2nd grade. That's when High School Musical came out, and that was kind of what started it. No, I don't have a boyfriend. I've only had 1 boyfriend, and that ended horribly, and I don't ever want to feel that way again. And I'm not telling you who my favorite is, I've only known you for like 3 hours."

"Interesting," Zach said, mocking me.

"Now, tell me about you. Same questions."

"Alright, well, I play basketball, football, and track. I've been singing for as long as I can remember. No, I don't have a girlfriend right now. I'm not really sure if I want one. I'm just keeping an open mind about that. And, obviously, you're my favorite," he replied.

"I know, I'm just irresistible," I said with a smirk.

"So, besides cheerleading, what do you do in your free time?"

"I don't know, I'm kind of a nerd, and I don't really have a lot of friends, but that's mostly due to my anxiety. I read a lot. I used to want to work in a bookstore so that I would get discounted books," I said, and laughed. "Wow, that sounded a lot less nerdy in my head."

He laughed. He had a wonderful laugh.

"I'm like that, too, don't worry. So, what are some of your favorites?"

"The obvious- Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, things like that. I read a lot of Nicholas Sparks, too. And I'm starting to like John Green. I'm currently reading The Fault In Our Stars."

"I heard that was good," he said.

"Yeah, I'm not sure what to think of it yet. I can already tell I'm going to end up crying."

"Well, here we are," he said. I looked outside and we were in front of my hotel. "Time flies."

"Yeah, thanks for taking me home. I really appreciate it," I said.

"No problem. If you ever need anything, I'm just across the street. Here I'll give you my room number." He took out a spare napkin and wrote it down. "See you Monday."

"See you Monday," I said, taking the napkin and walking away. I walked into the hotel and got into the elevator. I looked down at the napkin.

"Hey, Katie. My room number is 504. Thanks for a great night! ~Z" And written below it, was his phone number.
