CHAPTER 9
Not Good For Me
"You make me feel so right, even when it's so wrong. I wanna scream out loud, boy, but I just bite my tongue." ~"Bad For Me" by Megan and Liz
Zach walked out of the bathroom a few moments later, fully-clothed. "Sorry about that," he said. "I didn't know you were here."
"It's not a problem," I said.
"She probably enjoyed it," Andrew said with a smirk. I glared at him. "Anyways, I'm gonna go get some lunch or something. See ya," he said, and walked out the door.
"Did Andrew let you in?" Zach asked.
"Yeah. I texted you and he replied and said I could come over, so..."
"Oh," he replied. He sat down next to me and turned on the TV. I watched him flip through the channels, though nothing seemed to be on.
"So I took a walk this morning," I said.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. Have you ever been down by the lake? It's beautiful."
"I can't say that I have," he said.
"You should."
"Maybe."
"Well, anyway, while I was there, this kid came up to me, his name was Jake, and he actually knew who I was! He asked me for a picture and everything," I said.
"You're getting famous now. Get used to it, it happens all the time."
"I know that, but it's like the first time it's ever happened. It's crazy," I said, and he just shrugged. Something didn't seem right. He didn't seem like the Zach that I talked to last night. "Is something wrong?" I asked.
"No, why would anything be wrong?" he asked, getting defensive.
"I don't know, you just don't seem... normal."
"I'm fine, thanks," he said. This was a bad idea. Why did I come? I knew he didn't like me.
"Maybe I should go..." I said, getting up. "I'm kind of tired."
"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I just haven't been having the best day, that's all."
I sighed, but sat back down. "Okay."
"So, talk to me. I barely know you and you're just inviting yourself into my hotel room?" he said with a smile.
"Hey, you're the one that invited me."
"Yeah, I know. So, how's The Fault In Our Stars?"
"I haven't read any more of it since you last asked me," I said.
"Oh."
"Yeah. It's really cute, though. I wish I had a boyfriend like Augustus."
"Why don't you have a boyfriend?" he asked.
"I don't know. Just... the last boyfriend I had really hurt me. I don't want to go through that again, I guess. I mean, yeah, I wouldn't mind having a boyfriend, but something keeps holding me back."
"I'm sorry."
"Yeah. It sucks, but... what can I do?" I said. "I'm hungry. Wanna go get some lunch?" I asked, trying to change the subject.
"I have a feeling you're not really hungry, but why don't we take a walk to the lake? You know the one you went to earlier?"
"Yeah," I said. "I'd like that." He got up and offered me his hand. I took it, expecting him to let go, but he didn't. So, we walked down the hall toward the elevator, hand in hand.
This was really not good for me, Zach Beeken.
