I had nightmares, guilt for killing men I never knew. I cried every morning for the loss of people, I hadn’t known the few men I had ripped apart, but they were hurting a good and nice pack, even in the fight they had seemed more vicious than the Price pack. The next three days I was being called to the packhouse a few times to help a few people with severe wounds. I only came for that and went back home when I was finished. On the fourth day the last wound opened up and I knew they would be okay without me from that point. The Alpha seemed to know this too, he asked me to come by his office. I knocked and he asked me inside.
‘Hello sir,’ I said.
‘Dawn, please sit..’ he said.
I took a seat and he smiled at me. He wasn’t wearing his sling, but he still had his arm placed across his chest.
‘Dawn, me and my pack can’t thank you enough. I want to give you something to express our gratitude,’ he told me, grabbing a chequebook.
‘No, you don’t have to. You’ve given me so much information about myself. Taught me such important things.’
‘Dawn, me and my Beta agreed. You deserve the same paycheck our doctor had earned working for us,’ he said.
He made out a cheque to me and handed it over. I looked at it, my eyes wide and my mouth fell open.
‘Three.. that’s almost three thousand.. Oh my god. I.. I can’t take this,’ I muttered.
‘Do with it what you want, it’s yours. Dawn you saved me and my pack in more ways than one, you used up your own strength the first day and you gave many hours to help my pack. You deserve it,’ he said.
‘Th.. Thank you,’ I stuttered.
‘You’re welcome!’ he said, smiling at me.
I carefully placed the cheque in my wallet and he bid me goodbye. I wasn’t sure if I’d see him again soon. I went straight for the bank with my cheque. There I asked the money to be transfered to my account and withdrew some money.
When I got home Rhea was standing in the kitchen, like usual, she was playing a game at the table.
‘Hi!’ I said, smiling.
‘Hi sweety, I love seeing you so happy, you’ve been down the past days. What happened?’ she asked.
‘I ehm.. I worked at someone’s house the past weekend and today I saved the little dog he has, he was so glad that he payed me much more than we had agreed upon,’ I lied, I hate lying, but I couldn’t tell her the truth.
‘Oh, how much?’ she said, smiling at me.
‘Three thousand,’ I whispered.
‘That’s very generous! I’m so glad for you,’ she said, a little shocked by the amount, just like me.
‘Thanks mom,’ I said, pulling her in a hug.
The wound on my back had healed completely, so had all my other wounds.
‘I’m thinking of visiting grandma, now I have enough money for the journey,’ I told her.
‘That’s a wonderful idea! She’d be so pleased. Call her now!’ she said excitedly.
I grabbed the telephone from the charger and offered it to her, she knew the number of her own mother by heart. A few seconds later I was chatting with my grandmother.
‘Hi Nana,’ I said.
‘Dawn, my dear, what a nice surprise. How are you?’ she asked.
‘I’m doing great, how about you?’
‘Oh, I’m okay honey. I just wish I could visit you more. I miss my daughter and granddaughter,’ she said, I heard her broken smile.
‘We miss you too, Nana, but I have good news,’ I told her.
‘Oh, do tell?’ she said.
‘I’ve gotten a nice sum of money by working cleaning and helping someone. I have enough to come visit you for a week or so. Would you like me to come by?’ I asked.
‘Oh my sweetheart, I would love that. Don’t come with that car of yours! It’s way too far!’ she said.
‘No Nana, I have enough to come by plane,’ I promised.
‘Good, when will you be coming here?’ she asked.
‘I’ll look it up when you are chatting with mom, okay?’ I asked, she sounded so excited.
‘Okay, give your mom to me.’
I gave mom my phone and hurried upstairs to get my laptop. I sat down next to Rhea, looking for a decent priced plane ticket and soon I found one that left the next morning, August 20th.
‘Mom, could you drive me then?’ I asked, showing the ticket on the computer.
She nodded and chatted away with her mother.
‘Mom, she can be with you tomorrow by six, will you be able to collect her from the airport?’ Rhea asked.
‘Off course,’ I heard Nana say with my heightened hearing.
My mother nods at me and I buy the ticket immediately paying for it, so I could collect it at the desk the next morning. Please let me know what you think of my story! I love to recieve comments and maybe even vote?
