We ate on our way back, I treated Christopher to a nice hot meal in one of the towns we encountered on our way. He really had wanted to pay for me, but I really wanted to pay for this one time. He drove the rest of the way home, where we arrived at eight thirty. We went inside and a man came up to us, he looked familiar. I remembered it quickly, he was Daniel, Christopher’s Beta.

‘Good evening, miss,’ he said, shaking my hand, offering me a smile.

‘You don’t hate me?’ I asked, hiding in Christopher’s arms.

‘No, anyone who can make my best friend happy, is okay with me,’ he said.

I offered him a smile.

‘Christopher, they are going to play Battlefield! Come play with us!’ he said, excited.

He looked at me first, I nodded and he jumped out of my arms, following Daniel down the corridor into the living room. I followed them, sitting down in a corner, watching the screen. The room was filled with boys, I was the only girl. They didn’t pay attention to me and I liked that. I was comfortable sitting there watching my mate play a game with his friends. He kept playing ‘till well over midnight and I fell asleep in the comfortable armchair. It was a light sleep, because when Christopher picked me up, bridal style, to take me to bed, I felt it. I put my arms around his neck and snuggled into his chest. He placed me on his comfortable fluffy bed and pulled the blankets over me.

‘Shouldn’t I change?’ I muttered sleepily.

‘Hey honey, I didn’t notice you were awake,’ he said, gently caressing my face.

‘Can you give me my nightgown?’ I asked, not caring that Nana hadn’t packed my pajamas.

He pulled up my bag and grabbed the gown from it. He gave it to me and turned away, I quickly changed and let him know I was done.

‘Are you coming to bed too?’ I whispered.

‘Not yet, Muffin. I have to do a little work. I should be here in about an hour,’ he answered.

He came closer, kissing me shortly and walked away.

‘I’ll be here soon, just go to sleep darling,’ he said, walking out of the room.

I did fall asleep quickly, but something was nagging at me, which made me sleep very light.

Two hours later, someone entered the room, I was still in a sleeping state, but I knew something was wrong. I tried to wake up, but I couldn’t. Someone touched my legs, it lacked the tingles it usually sent through my body. I woke up startled, starring in the face of an unknown man.

‘Who are you?’ I asked, my eyes wide.

All my alarms on the inside went off.

‘Vampire!’ my wolf growled.

I shifted instantly and snarled at him.

‘Oh dear, you’ve learned by now. How marvelous for you,’ he said with an arrogant flare.

I growled when I recognized him in the dark, I had seen him before, he had been the first and only vampire I ever met. He came closer, I snapped at his leg. He hit me over the head with tremendous force, but I didn’t back down. I closed my jaw over his arm and I bit down hard. I could see his pain, but he didn’t make a sound. He shook me off like I was a hamster that had just bit him and he slammed me into the wall of Christopher’s office. Within a second the vampire was by my side, he snapped my front leg, as if it was a toothpick, just as Christopher and Daniel ran in, as wolves. I shifted, unable to stop it. I screamed in pain. Both wolves ran towards the vampire, who broke through the glass in the balcony door and jumped off. Both Daniel and Christopher went after him, just like the warriors on guard. I was still screaming, crying. Angel came to me, sitting down next to me.

‘We need to get you down to the infirmary,’ she said.

‘No.. No..’ I panted. ‘No.. you have to… set the bone!! Just pull..’

She grabbed my arm, I bit down on my own fingers, because there wasn’t anything else in grasp. She pulled once, with a lot of force. I squirmed on the floor, biting down my scream.

‘Come dear, lets get you dressed and down to the infirmary,’ she said, grabbing one of Christopher’s plain black t-shirts.

She helped me with one of my own panties and the t-shirt was only pulled over one arm. The broken arm, I kept on my chest, under the t-shirt.

‘They are coming back, no one else got hurt,’ Angel told me.

‘I’m relieved,’ I said, shivering.

I didn’t know what I would have done if the vampire had hurt Christopher. Just as we reached the infirmary, Christopher joined us in a loose pair of pants, but no shirt. He didn’t speak, his eyes were black with anger. The doctor was a young man, he really seemed kind.

‘Who set the bone?’ he asked, immediately.

‘I told.. Angel.. how,’ I said, trembling.

‘How did you know?’

‘She is a veterinarian and she had to do this before,’ Christopher answered for me, he still looked furious.

He had to be angry with me, I hadn’t asked his help through our link. I hadn’t even thought of it, until now. He didn’t touch me or come near me. I felt like crying, I was so scared and my arm was killing me.

‘Christopher, if you were to give a little of your blood, she will heal faster,’ the doctor said.

‘No, I don’t want him to do that,’ I said in a resolved voice.

‘If he doesn’t, you will have to be put in a cast for three days, after that it might hurt for a day or two,’ he said.

‘I’ll endure, he won’t give me his blood, I won’t let him,’ I said.

Half an hour later, Angel and Christopher were taking me upstairs, it was still the middle of the night. When we were at our door, Angel told me she was going to her own room. I had almost wanted to beg her to stay, Christopher still looked angry, I was afraid of him. I looked at her pleading, she looked back with a reassuring smile. I sighed and stepped into our bedroom. While I went to the bed, sitting down, Christopher walked around, pacing. I looked around to the balcony, realising that the window had already been fixed.

‘I’m sorry,’ I whispered, pulling my knees up.

‘Why didn’t you call for me, that bastard wouldn’t have been able to hurt you!’ he yelled.

‘I’m not..’

‘You could have just said anything, I would have been here in a second!’ he snarled.

‘Chris..’

‘I should have been here already,’ he yelled, cutting me off again.

‘I’m sorry, please let me explain?’ I whispered, crying.

‘I’m so sorry Dawn, I should have been here, with you. Protecting you!’ he said, sitting down before me, his head down.

‘Please, Christopher, I’m not angry. You are. I never thought of calling you, I never had anyone to share a bond with like I have with you. I never realised I could have called for you in my mind, I forgot. I’m so sorry.. You should be angry with me..’ I whispered, tears falling on my lap.

‘I’m not really angry with you, Muffin. I’m angry with the damned vampire and myself, I haven’t kept my promise,’ he whispered, pulling me in a loving embrace.

‘I’m so glad he didn’t kill you,’ he whispered.

‘Please come to bed with me now?’ I asked, my tears hadn’t stopped falling yet.

‘Yes, definitely,’ he said.

He crawled over the bed and layed down on his side, pulling me close to him.

‘I’m never letting you out of my sight, not until that horrible thing is dead,’ he promised.
