I got home after Nana had gone to bed, I had a jittery feeling. I sat in the living room for quite some time, unable to shake the feeling I had missed something important. I went to bed late, but I hardly slept, I didn’t feel at ease. When I slept my nightmares kept coming back, seeing so many wolves die by the hands of our opponents. At around three in the morning, I went back outside, leaving a note for my grandmother, that I was jogging. I left my clothing in a tree nearby and shifted quickly. I went back to the opening in the woods, taking the same route as before. I ran even further towards the place where I had turned around a few hour before. A faint smell was there, it was a nice smell of cinnamon and vanilla. It was intoxicating, but I also recognized I couldn’t travel further, because I was at the edge of the Clark territory, this other pack might not be so understanding of rogues. I wanted to stay there, until the smell faded, but it made me want to cross the border. I couldn’t do that, they might rip me to shreds. I ran the other way, trying to calm myself down. I got to the house, just before seven o’clock, where I dressed myself in the shelter of the woods and went inside.

‘Good morning Nana,’ I said, she was eating breakfast.

‘Good morning dear, did you have a nice run?’ she asked.

‘Yes, it was nice. I went out in the woods,’ I said.

‘Oh, sweetie, please promise you won’t do that again, there are wolves in these parts. You never know what you encounter, promise me okay?’ she asked.

I knew it was horrible to lie to my own grandmother, but I had to run. Before I knew about being a wolf, I did long distance running at school and the track, which seemed very logical now.

‘I promise Nana, what would you like to do today?’ I asked.

‘I thought you might want to go to the movies, with your old Nana,’ she said.

‘Off course, which movie would you like to see?’ I asked, grabbing my phone to see which movies were in the theaters at the moment. We decided on a romantic movie and soon we were on our way to the theater, laughing and having fun together. I loved being with Nana, she always seemed to cheer me up. We were a little early, so we went to a small coffee place and got some  drinks. The movie took two hours and afterwards we went to an italian place to eat pizza together.

‘What are your plans for tonight?’ Nana asked.

‘If you wouldn’t mind I would like to go for another run,’ I whispered.

‘You still love running, don’t you?’ she asked smiling.

‘Yes, it’s so liberating,’ I answered.

I wasn’t about to tell her that I had smelled something divine and I hoped this time he might cross into the Clark pack. I really wanted to know who he was, I wondered if the entire pack had that smell. We went back home and she urged me to go out earlier today, so we could play a game or watch some tv together before she would go to bed.

I went out in sweatpants and a simple t-shirt. I jogged towards town, because Nana was waving me off. I ran into a street and went straight back to the woods. Along the trees I ran, still in human form. I hid my clothes in the same tree and shifted. Running straight for the border, this time the scent was much stronger. I was on edge, it smelled so nice and I wanted to find the one that rubbed this scent off. I paced along the border and suddenly I couldn’t contain myself. I stepped passed the border and made my way into unknown territory. I kept as quiet as I could, but I knew they would smell me, they would confront me. I ran further and further, following his scent. A howl pierced the night, others followed. I could identify their positions immediately, they had surrounded me. I stopped dead in my tracks and looked around me, fearful, it must have been a trap. I stepped back, growls arose from the night, I stepped forward, wolves appeared. Two wolves attacked from the side, clawing and snapping at me, wounding me. I snarled and defended myself. A gust of wind brought a powerful scent past my nose, cinnamon and vanilla. I whimpered and in my distraction both wolves grabbed a piece of me. One had the skin of my neck in his mouth and the other my right leg, both drawing blood. A loud snarl came from behind me, he sounded furious, but I couldn’t understand. Suddenly both wolves released me, I whipped around, favouring my right hind leg and started to growl when I saw myself stare into the eyes of an enormous silver wolf, his amber eyes were mesmerising. He was still growling, he was a large Alpha male. Since he was looking at me, I cowered away, submitting completely by laying down on my side with my snout on my paws. So many feelings were going through me, I wanted the wolf to come to me, touch me. The wolves around us, stepped back, being swallowed by darkness, the silver wolf came to me and nudged my face. The touch sent tingles over my body. He shook his head and put his paw over his face, then he shook again. I think he was trying to say he didn’t need me to submit, but why had they attacked me? He stepped closer and I was scared for my life, what if this beautiful wolf would change his mind. I stepped back, not wanting him to be closer, even though I really wanted him closer. What if he would really hurt me, maybe he just wanted to kill me himself? I avoided his eyes, but he didn’t attack. I bolted past him, still trying to favour my hind leg. He was a lot faster than me, now my leg was hurting. Just before I reached the border of the Clark pack he caught up with me and stepped before me, making me stop. He placed himself on the floor covering his face with his paw. An Alpha was submitting to me, I was frightened, I needed to leave, but something in me liked that he had come after me.

‘Dawn! Dawny come home please!’ I heard my Nana yell.

It was very faint, because of the distance, but I heard her with my excellent hearing. The Alpha jerked his head up, he listened to her as well and looked at me confused. I shot him an apologetic look and I ran away, still favoring my leg. He didn’t follow me into the Clark territory I ran home, shifted and pulled on my t-shirt. I felt blood trickle down my neck and onto my back and also on my leg the wounds were closing, but it would take until tomorrow before they would be gone. I kept thinking about the silver wolf, his eyes didn’t let me go. I let my long hair down and pulled my pants on, like this Nana might not see my wounds. I bit through the pain in my leg while walking and quickly I walked normally, no one could notice.

‘I’m here Nana,’ I yelled, while running around the house so I could come up from the town side.

‘I was so worried, you were gone for quite a while,’ she said.

‘I got a little carried away, don’t worry Nana, I can take care of myself,’ I said.

‘I heard wolves, I don’t want anything..’

‘Nana.. you know I was in town, I promised not to go into the woods again.’

She pulled me into a hug, holding on to my neck. It hurt a lot, my face in anguish.

‘Are you alright? she asked me worried.

‘Yes, off course, I just hurt my ankle a little, it’s fine now,’ I said, giving her a smile. ‘I’ll just take a shower.’

We went inside and I went up to my bedroom, I got clean clothes and some bandages from my bag. I went to the bathroom and turned on the warm shower. While the water came to temperature, my thoughts went back to the silver wolf. His amber eyes were seared into my mind. I felt the temperature and it was nice so I undressed and got under the hot water. I couldn’t get the Alpha out of my head. After the shower and putting on the bandages I went to my Nana and we watched television the rest of the evening. Nana went to bed before me, I wasn’t tired, but eventually I did go to bed. I grabbed my sketchpad and started drawing, hoping that drawing the eyes, would get them out of my head. I ended up drawing his entire face around those mesmerising eyes.
