I sat outside of Carter's house with her watching Wolf run around. It's January 2nd now, and since we go back to school tomorrow, we figured we'd hangout a little bit because our schedules are changing and we had a lot of the same classes together, and now we won't.
Carter got a basketball out and started shooting. As I watched her, I realized she had some skill.
"How come you not on the ball team?" I asked.
She shrugged. "Not a baller. Not really an athlete either."
"So how you do good?"
"It's natural I guess."
"That going in between your legs, them A1 layups, and your Steph Curry ass three's ain't natural."
She rolled her eyes and stopped. "I can't just be good?"
"I didn't say you couldn't, I was just saying." I said getting defensive. "You out here looking like a pro, and I never seen you ball before. Dang."
"I watched the boys on my block play at the park all the time when I was younger, then when I got older in like 5th and stuff, I started to play with them, then in 8th I broke my wrist and my mom's husband was convinced they broke my wrist when he was the one that did it and he made me stop playing with them, so I would watch them play all the time until he made me stop going out the house." She said angrily.
"Well if you told me that the first time you wouldn't be mad." I stood up and pulled my pants up. "Play me."
"What yo?"
"Play me. I know you ain't deaf."
She raised an eyebrow at me, then took her hoodie off. "Check." She passed me the ball and I passed it back.
The game lasted for awhile. We ended up doing 2 outta 3 and I won. I won the first game, and she won the second, then I won the third. Each game was only a point difference.
"You got game, girl." I chuckled. I noticed her face and it looked tore up. "What's wrong witchu? Is it cause I won? If it is, I'm sorry."
"Are the girls okay? Something don't feel right."
"The girls are fine. They probably in Alexa's room doing whatever. And Kingston still in there, so we good."
"We've been outside for a long time. Do you think we should check on them?"
Carter looked really worried and that's when I started to get worried. I sat down on the step and pulled her down next to me.
"Why you worry so much?"
"With all the shit I've been through, it's hard not to. I think it's just that, I'm trying to be there for Alexa and Taylor as a protector. I see Taylor so much that she's basically like a lil sister to me, and if something happened to Alexa or Taylor I'd lose my mind. Literally. I'm so damn close to it, you don't even know."
She laughed, but I could tell she was serious with what she said.
"And like, with them being so young, it reminds me of how I was when I was their age. When I had my mom and my dad in the same house, and I wasn't being abused and stuff by him. And nothing is being held against you when I say this, but if I come to find out some nigga is hitting on either of them, the nigga's shit getting rocked. Then having my dad in a job where he could get hurt or killed so easily, is just scary. I already lost my mom, and if I lose him, you'd never see me again because I'd be in an asylum."

Romance"Why do you treat me this way?" I asked softly. He looked shocked by the question, but then his facial expression softened. "Because...I like you." He mumbled. "What?" "I like you!"
