There it was. After walking for hours, I finally arrived to my dad's house. I stood in front of the door debating on whether I should knock or not. The house was huge. Almost like a mansion. Compared to my house, it was beautiful and well designed. My dad must've been rich to have been able to afford a house like this. There were beautiful cherry blossom trees at the front of the house. The grass was so green and perfect that it almost didn't look real. I looked near the garage and saw two cars. One was probably my dad's and the other one probably belonged to Rachel, my dad's wife.
I turned my head back to the door. It was now or never. I made a fist and knocked on the door. I knocked a couple of times, but no one opened the door. They were obviously home since their cars were parked. I tried ringing the door bell a couple of times. I almost gave up until the door finally opened.
In front of me appeared a beautiful lady with curly brown hair and grey eyes. This must've been Rachel. She was holding a child that resembled my dad way too much. He had the same blonde hair as my dad and I, and he had ocean blue eyes. Did he have another kid?
"Can I help you?" Rachel looked at me wondering if I was some lost stranger. She wasn't wrong. I was lost. In every way possible. She obviously didn't recognize me, even though it's only been two years.
"Its Ava."
She quickly tensed up and I could tell she regretted opening the door. She looked me up and down in disgust and looked as if she wanted to slap me across the face. I don't blame her. I resembled my mom. Anyone that knew my mom knew that she messed up my dad's life.
"What are you doing here? Get out. Now." She put the little boy down and tried closing the door until I stopped her.
"Look. I'm not happy to see you either. In fact, I don't even wanna talk to you. Just let me see dad. Its important." I wasn't in any mood of arguing and from her expression I could tell that she wanted to argue.
"Rachel! Who was at the door? Was it one of my clients? I told him to come over to resolve some issue." I heard my dad. After two years, I finally heard my dad. At that moment, memories started flooding back. The long talks that my dad and I used to have whenever I had a problem, the late night movies that we used to watch. Everything came back. I started tearing up. But I immediately stopped myself. I couldn't show my weak side. They couldn't know. I had to stay strong. I had to show them I'm completely fine.
I could tell that Rachel was about to reply but before she got the chance, my dad came downstairs. Him and I locked eyes. Seeing him after two years, he looked different. He still had blonde hair and his skin was still wrinkle free, but he looked.. happier.
"A...A..Ava?"
I tried responding. I tried to say something. But nothing came out. I just stood there in shock that he even remembered me. I saw his expression change from happy to shock. My hands began to tremble and my heart began to race. I looked over at Rachel and she continued to look at me in disgust as if I was some poisonous animal. I wanted to go and hug my dad, to tell him how much I missed our fun moments and memories. But I couldn't do that. I was here for only one reason. To get away from my mom. I couldn't allow myself to be close to anyone while I was here. I had to protect myself. I was on my own.
"Long time no see dad, ha."
"Ava, what are you doing here?" He was clearly still in shock.
Rachel looked from my dad to me. "You know what? I think its best for you to leave. I'm not sure why you decided to come here after two years, but you need to leave. You're not welcome here."
Wow. Rachel was a huge bitch. My mom always told me that she wasn't the nicest lady, but I always thought my mom was lying to make herself feel better.
"Rachel, like I said before, I didn't come here to talk to you. I came here to talk to my dad. So if you could put that in your mind, It would help a lot."
My dad went and stood next to Rachel and put an arm around her waist to comfort her. He then looked back at me. "Ava. I asked you why you're here."
If I wasn't already broken into billions of pieces, that would've hurt. It would've hurt that he wasn't happy at all to see me. He didn't want to see me. He was happy with Rachel and his child. He finally had the happiness that he wanted for so long and I just ruined it.
But this was my only choice.
"Well. How do I put this so it sounds normal? Mom beat me up a couple of times. Like you know, punch me, kick me, all that cool stuff. So I decided I had had enough and ran away. The only place I could stay was here. So I'm here. Surprise." I smirked.
My dads expression was unreadable. He looked as if he was even more shocked than before and he began looking at the bandaids all over my body and the bruises and cuts that were all over my face. Rachel began tearing up.
"Ava did you tell the police?" My dads voice sounded concerned. That was a bit too surprising to me.
I didn't know if I should tell him the truth or not. If I told him I called the police, he would wonder why they didn't arrest her. If I told him I didn 't call, he'll end up calling and mom would get arrested. As much as I disliked my mom for doing what she did, I still loved her and didn't want her spending the rest of her life in jail.
"Dad, it doesn't matter. I need a place to stay. Even if its for a month. Then i'll leave your life forever. Don't worry."
Rachel wiped her tears away and looked right at me. "Only one month. Then you leave."
Her bitch status was back. And I liked this side better than her other side. I didn't want her to care for me. I didn't want her to be sympathetic.
"You can stay here for a little while. You're a senior so you'll graduate in a couple of months and then you can find yourself another place to stay. You wont be my responsibility anymore. As for school, you can transfer to a new school, closer to this area. Rachel will go tomorrow and get all your registration stuff taken care of."
I tried to process what he was saying, but only one sentence kept replaying in my mind. 'You wont be my responsibility anymore.' He's only letting me stay because he has no other choice. I try not to let it get to me, but it hurts so fucking much.
"Are you deaf?" Rachel snaps.
I look back at my dad who seems to be waiting for me to reply to what he said.
"Okay. Whatever. I got it." I reply.
Rachel looks at me with hatred visible in her eyes. "Let me show you your room."
She leads me upstairs to the third floor of the house. Even the stairwell is pretty and beautifully designed. She takes me towards a room in the corner of the hallway. The room was really pretty. The walls were decorated a sky blue color and there was a king size bed. There were paintings all over the wall of random things. It felt nice. It felt a lot better than what I was used to. The room was bigger than my old room and looked way better than my old one.
"If you mess a single thing up, you'll be kicked out of this house that very second. Is that understood?"
Now she was really beginning to piss me off. "Actually Rachel, you can't kick me out. Or else you and your husband will be responsible. You know what that means? If I end up dying in the cold weather, it'll be all your fault."
To say that she was pissed would be an understatement. Her face went red and she clenched her hands into fists. She went towards the door and before leaving, said one last sentence.
"Oh Ava, while you're here, try not to fuck up like your mom did."
With that final sentence, she slammed the door and left.
That sentence should've hurt. I should've felt pain. But I didn't. I didn't feel anything.
