FINAL CHAPTER.
1 Month Later:
"That must be Hailey." Jai said, pointing at one of the stars in the dark sky. "No." He shook his head. "That's Hailey." He said while pointing at the shiniest star in the sky. The other stars were nothing compared to this one.
I smiled and stared at him. "That's definitely her." I agreed with him.
Hailey died two weeks ago after her body shut down completely. Jai and I were with her, sitting right next to her bed, when she took her final breaths. I barely knew her, but she didn't deserve to die at all. I wouldn't stop crying the moment she passed away and as soon as I saw a tear slide down her face and her lips form a smile, I broke into a million pieces. I find it strange how we often end up crying when someone dies even though we barely know them. She was a huge part of Jai's life and I could tell from his face expression that day that he wasn't able to cope with losing someone who was like his sister. In front of me and all of the nurses, he remained strong but as soon as he got home, he broke down in tears and wouldn't leave his room for days. I could never replace Hailey. Nor did I even want to. My role in Jai's life was a role handed to me only, and Hailey's role in his life was handed to only her. No one could take anyone else's role. Everything happens for a reason. We are put into someone's life for a reason. Whether it is to help them grow or to make them smile, we all have reasons.
"Having a picnic in the park at 3am wasn't such a good idea, was it?" He asked me, laughing lightly.
"It wasn't a good idea at all. It was a perfect idea." I said.
And it was. Laying in the grass under the stars might sound super cliché, but it felt really nice. We were two people gazing at the beauty of the sky, enjoying each moment spent with each other. I didn't need to be anywhere else. I felt at home when I was with Jai.
"Do you wanna know something?" He asked after a while.
I nodded.
"I was scared to love. Every time I loved someone, they would just disappear from my life or I would end up doing something to hurt them or betray them. I was so damn scared. But then this amazing person ended up listening to my conversation with my friend one day and she ended up getting caught and as soon as I began talking to her, I felt this magnetic pull, attracting me towards her. I couldn't leave you. And that's why I began annoying you as much as I could, because if you haven't noticed, people annoy those that they like a lot." He laughed and I found myself smiling. "You always tell me that I saved you, but I'm quite sure it's the other way around. I'm madly in love with you."
He was going to be the death of me. His kind, loving, words slipped off his tongue in the most beautiful manner. His smile was capable of healing all inner wounds. His eyes shined like the moon in the darkest hours. I was deeply and uncontrollably in love with him. I didn't feel butterflies in my stomach because this was reality and in reality, stuff like that didn't happen. I did, however, feel all the side effects that one actually does feel when they're in love. I felt the increase in my heartbeat, felt my hands beginning to sweat from the nervousness, and I definitely felt that beautiful warm feeling inside of me telling me that this is exactly what true happiness feels like.
"You know, now would be the time to say something back because I just confessed a whole bunch of random shit and I probably sound really dumb right now." He rubbed his neck and laughed.
"Aw, but you always sound dumb!" I teased.
He glared at me and then began whining like a little kid. "I never sound dumb! You're hurting my feelings!"
"You seriously sound like a kid." I told him.
"Then I'm gonna stop talking."
Staying true to his words, he stayed silent for a couple of minutes. The silence was comfortable but I still liked hearing him talk. "Jai." I said. No response. "Jai!!" I screamed at him. He was so stubborn. "JAI!! STOP IGNORING ME!" I yelled again.
