"You need to tell us what happened." Luke said to Jai.
"Did the nurses say something? Seriously, tell us what happened." Beau said calmly.
I sighed inwardly. It was probably four in the morning and I was here at their house, trying my best to comfort Jai, who refused to speak a word. An hour ago, I was getting ready for bed when I got a phonecall from Luke telling me that I needed to go over to their place as soon as possible. Jai had visited Hailey a while ago and when he came home, his entire mood had shifted from being happy to being completely down and upset. He wouldn't even bother opening his door until Daniel and Beau threatened to break it.
I grabbed his hand. "What happened at the hospital?"
He pulled his hand out of my grip and stood up. "Have any of you thought that maybe I don't wanna talk about it right now?!" He yelled, making me flinch slightly. "I'm already suffering inside and you all gang up and force me to talk about something that I'm not comfortable talking about right now! Do I ever force any of you to talk about something you don't wanna talk about? Do I?!"
"Okay this is ridiculous." James stood up. "You're acting completely insane. I get that you're hurt and clearly something happened at the hospital, but that gives you absolutely no right to yell at everyone like that. Don't let your inner emotions control you to the point where you forget what's going on around you."
This only made Jai angrier and I didn't know what to do to calm him down. The whole point of them calling me here was so that I could do something to fix his mood.
"You don't even care, do you?! None of this matters to any of you!" He continued yelling.
Beau took a deep breath. I could tell he was beginning to lose his temper. "We do care about her. She's important to us too. You have to understand that it's hard for us to see you-"
"She's dying! The nurses said she's getting weaker and she has less than a month left. The car crash affected her brain in many ways and now she has only a month! And that's only if she's lucky!"
Time stopped. No one said anything and no one even dared to move. I felt tears cloud my vision and there was a lump forming in my throat. There are moments when actions speak louder than words. I got up and wrapped my arms around Jai's waist. As he rested his head on my shoulder, I could feel his wet tears seeping through my shirt. I didn't want him to cry, but I couldn't stop him. Keeping everything inside at all times and keeping ones emotions bottled up inside would only make things worse. If he needed to cry, he had every right to. Luke rubbed his eyes and walked out of the room. It didn't take me long to realize he was tearing up too. I only met Hailey a couple times, but I knew how much she meant to all of them. They've known her for years and knowing that she was dying and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do to save her, was the most terrible feeling ever.
I didn't know what to say. I knew that nothing I said would ever make things better. Sometimes words weren't enough.
"There's still a slight chance that she'll make it." Daniel said softly.
Jai shook his head. "You and I both know there's no chance. We only tell ourselves that to make ourselves feel better. She's not getting better and she's going to die in a couple of weeks. I can't lose her." His voice cracked and my heart ached. "She's always been like a sister to me. I can't lose her. I can't." He whispered.
I believe humans are selfish. I knew they'd all hurt after she passed away, but none of them bothered to think about how she felt. They weren't crying because Hailey was about to lose her life. They were crying because they would lose her and would no longer be able to see her. They would no longer be able to hold her or talk to her or touch her. I guess it's just human nature. It's human nature to break down once one realizes that they will lose someone from their life. People spend time crying and tearing apart when someone is dying because of their own selfish reasons.
