I stared at the ceiling for hours. I tried to sleep. But tonight, I just couldn't. Its been one week since I moved here. The first few days I was able to sleep perfectly. Probably because I never got enough sleep when I was back at home. But now, my eyes refused to stay closed. And even if I did close them, my thoughts wouldn't let me sleep. My thoughts kept racing back to all the terrible memories I faced with mom.

I kept wondering what she must be doing right now. Did she even notice I was gone? Of course she did, I tried convincing myself. I mean, she was my mother after all. She couldn't just forget me. As much as I tried telling myself that, deep down I knew that she didn't care. She probably didn't even bother to look where I went, to check if I was even alive. I sat up on my bed and picked up the family picture I had placed on the side of my bed. The picture was of dad, mom, and I. I was about five years old. I didn't really remember when the picture was taken, but it was the only actual framed picture of my family that I had. Rachel wasn't pleased to see this picture when she came into my room today morning to tell me that school was going to start tomorrow. But I just ignored her. This picture brought me a small amount of happiness, and no one could take it away from me.

Dad and Rachel didn't talk to me much. I mostly just stayed in my room the whole day unless it was time for dinner. Many times Adam would come to my room and try to play with me. Adam was Rachel and dad's son. He was about five years old. I actually enjoyed his company. He would come and show me his toys and ask me which one I liked the best. But before I could even answer any of his questions, Rachel would drag him out and tell me to stay away from Adam before I end up messing him up too. I wasn't really surprised to be honest. I saw it coming.

The light was visible outside now. I looked at the clock and it was 6:00am. Great, time for school. The school wasn't that far away. It was about a fifteen minute walk, so I decided I would just walk. I picked out a pair of skinny jeans and a random Nirvana t-shirt. I put on my vans, grabbed my backpack, and ran downstairs.

"Ready for school, Ava? I could drop you off if you want." Dad was sitting on the table drinking coffee and reading a newspaper. It reminded me of old times.

"No. Im fine. Bye." I ran out of the house before he could say anything else. Or worse, before Rachel ended up saying something. She enjoyed insulting me.

After walking for fifteen to twenty minutes, I reached a huge school. I didn't see anyone walking into the school, so I was assuming that I was late.

I searched for the main office so that I could get my schedule. The main office wasn't so hard to find. It was located on the first floor.

"Can I help you?" The lady asked me with a smile on her face.

"I'm Ava Acosta. I need my schedule."

"Oh right! Heres your schedule." She handed me a paper. I scanned through it. Most of my classes were on the first floor. The first class was English, it was also on the first floor.

"And would you like any help finding your class?" She asked.

"No, I got it." I walked out of the main office and searched for my room number. 1050. Now that I thought about it, I should of asked for help. I was about to go back into the main office when I heard two people screaming.

"I fucking told you not to!" I heard a guy scream.

"Why the fuck does it matter if I did?" the other one began to argue back.

Being the curious person I am, I walked near the area where I heard the voices. I tried staying near the lockers to avoid being caught. I didn't know anyone in this school, and it'd be best not to attract any attention.

I looked at both of the boys. One of them seemed as if he was a freshman or sophomore. He looked really scared. He had blonde hair and electric green eyes. He wasn't so tall. He was shorter than the other guy.

"Look Jai, I didn't mean to do that. It just happened." the guy said in a regretful tone.

I looked at the other guy, and I really don't think I should've, because right when I did, we locked eyes.

"What the fuck? Were you listening to us this whole time?" Jai yelled.

Who did he think he was? Some superstar? I could listen to whoever whenever I wanted to.

"Why would I wanna listen to you guys talk? I couldn't care less. I was just walking in the hallways and got lost."

He came closer to me and I guess he realized that I was new here because his expression softened. I got the chance to notice his features. He had shiny chocolate brown eyes mixed in with a nice green color. His hair was a darkish brown color. I looked at his arm and saw a couple of tattoos. His body was well built which must have meant that he was athletic.

"See something you like?" He smirked.

"Fuck off."

"Oh you can swear too!" His brown eyes were full of amusement.

I started walking away from him and his friend. I had to find out where my class was before I got into trouble for being so late.

"You know, if you need help finding your class, I can help." He started walking next to me. "Hey, John, just meet me after school and we'll try to find a way out of this issue that you fucked up." Jai waved to his friend and snatched my schedule from my hand.

"What the hell?" I screamed.

"So your name is Ava. That's a weird name. Ava. Ava. Avaaaa. Avaaa. How do people even get used to that name?"

"Give me my schedule back."

He ignored me and looked through my classes and began smirking again.

"We have art together."

"I dont care." And I really didn't. I grabbed my schedule back and put it in my backpack. Jai led me to my classroom and began laughing. I chose not to ask why he was laughing. It was a waste of time anyway. And it really shouldn't matter to me.

"Hey Ava, nice shirt. I don't see many people wearing a Nirvana shirt." He flicked my forehead playfully and walked away.

Leaving me alone in front of the door to my classroom.
