"Ava freakin Acosta! You can run, but you cannot hide! So open this door this instant or I will be forced to break this door!" Beverly screamed from behind my bedroom door.
I rolled my eyes. "Leave me alone!" I yelled back.
"How could you not tell me you and Jai are dating?!"
It honestly bothered me whenever people tried coming into my personal business or got irritated with me not telling them stuff that didn't concern them in any way. I don't get why people, even friends, feel the need to know everything.
"Open the door!" She screamed.
I got off my bed and opened the door. "Happy?" I glared at her.
"Estatic!"
"Who even let you in?" I asked, trying to ignore her evil glares. And I really did need to know how she got inside considering the fact that my family was still on vacation so no one was home.
"Doesn't matter!" She sat down next to me. "How long have the two of you been dating? Oh my God, it's been happening since your birthday, right?! I knew it!" She kept talking and I honestly didn't need to give her any explanation since she seemed to have figured it all out already. "You know what's funny? I have a ship name in mind for both of you. It's Java! Get it? You know that software? The one named Java?" She began laughing really hard. Her face was beginning to go red and she fell of the bed.
"Sorry to burst your bubble, but that wasn't even funny."
"That was fucking hilarious don't you dare deny."
She stopped talking and glanced straight towards my wrist. I looked down and realized the sleeve of my shirt wasn't hiding the scars on my wrist. I immediately pulled them down, scolding myself for not being more cautious. "You should go." I opened my bedroom door. "Seriously, please. Just go" I pleaded.
She grabbed my wrist and pulled my sleeve back up, my scars being visible once again. "Who?" She asked. "Who did this to you? These scars so fucking deep. Who did this?!" She had a tight grip on my wrist, and I wasn't able to pull away.
"Does it matter?" My voice cracked. I was weak once again. My mask slipped off and I let my inner emotions unfold.
"Who?" She pressed. "I need to know who did this. Please."
I was brought back into the time when my mother abused me. All the fear and pain came back all at once. All the memories came flooding back. I felt like I was in that moment again. I remembered the way she used to throw me around to relieve her own emotional pain. I choked back the tears and faced Beverly, who was fuming at the moment. "My mom." I whispered, letting my cold exterior disappear for a couple of minutes.
"Rachel?!" She yelled in disbelief. "Rachel did this to you? That fucking-"
I shook my head and sighed. "Rachel isn't my mom. My real mom is currently locked up in jail. She used to mistreat and abuse me all the time which explains why I have scars all throughout my body." I felt a sting in my heart. "I ran away from home and came here. My dad.. he's my real dad. He divorced my mother a few years ago and married Rachel. I couldn't take the cruel torture anymore. I needed to escape." I saw pity in Beverly's eyes. "Don't you dare look at my like that." I warned. "I don't need your pity. So don't you dare look at me like that. I'm fine, okay?" I grabbed both her shoulders so she'd look at me. "Trust me when I say I'm okay. She's out of my life and she isn't coming back."
"How.. How are you okay with all of this? If my mother ever did that, I'd make sure to torture her all I could. How are you fine with all of this?!"
I sighed and rubbed my head. "I'm okay with all of this because she's my mother. No, I don't want to torture her at all. Sure, she abused me and made me feel like shit, but you can't change a person, can you? She's in jail, she got what she deserved. I don't need to make her suffer." And it was true. She did the worst things imaginable and she was a monstrous mother, but she had her reasons for being the way she was. She made major mistakes, but that didn't mean she was all bad. She was still a good person deep down. She was just lost and let her inner demons control her.
