chapter twenty | the start of her pain

What do you do when you feel like telling someone the truth but know it's a bad idea to do it? Telling them means giving up the cards and the cards are the only thing Artemis has of her parents. Then again Alec did say he would tell her what really happened to her parents.

So as she stood there looking at his brown eyes she couldn't help but think she could trust him. But just because she trust him doesn't mean she will tell him everything.

Come to think of it it was never easy for Artemis to open up. It was different with Scott and Stiles because she knew them since she was little. And Isaac don't get her started on Isaac.

Isaac was a whole other story. Since the moment she meet him she felt close to him. Even back in sophomore year when Isaac was turned and he was on the bad side Artemis felt like he could never be a bad guy. Even if he had a bad boy attitude and a bad boy jacket he was a sweet heart.

The blonde could still remember the time when he snuck out of Derek's place just to go see her. Which at the time Artemis felt was a stupid idea because he was a fugitive.

Artemis couldn't sleep. You would think that finding Boyd and telling him not to take the bite would have made her feel different but it didn't. Plus it didn't help at all, Scott and Artemis were too late. By the time they reached the ice rink Boyd had already been bit.

But surprisingly that wasn't the reason why the blonde was upset. What upset her was that Isaac is on Derek's side. Not to mention he attacked Scott.

What brought Artemis out of her thoughts was a tap on her window. Her window was closed and covered so she couldn't see anyone but when the noise sounded again she stood up and walked to her window.

When she opened it she found Isaac Lahey looking at her with a half smile. "What the hell are you doing here?!" She yelled in a whisper.

"I just had to make sure you were okay."

Artemis rolled her eyes. Sure she was fine, but she wasn't okay with the fact that Isaac had attacked her brother. "I'm fine."

Isaac shook his head. "No your not."

"How do you- -" The blonde paused when she realized she was talking to a werewolf. "Never mind get inside."

- - -

"Artemis?" The voice of Alec Lightwood cut through her thoughts. "What's wrong you just zoned out for like a minute."

Artemis sighed. "Sorry I was just remembering something about my ex." After saying that the blonde shut her mouth. To be honest she didn't know why she told him that.

"You're having flashbacks of your ex?" Alec asked with a hint of jealousy.

Artemis rolled her eyes. "Never mind. Isaac isn't important right now, but you said you know what happened to my parents. Tell me."

"Not unless you tell me about the cards."

The blonde was getting annoyed now. He was like another version of Liam, the annoying beta. Except Alec wasn't a werewolf he was a shadowhunter.

"Look I don't have the cards, but I do have something." That wasn't a total lie. She had the box but she didn't have the cards. The cards were with Lydia safe and sound at her house.

"Are you mad me?" The blue eyed beta asked as he sat on the blondes bed. Artemis smiled slightly as she sat next to him. Even if she was mad she couldn't help but smile at Isaac because he was so adorable.

"Yes, but now I'm not so sure."

Isaac smiled as he grabbed a hold of her hand. "I'm so sorry you had to see that. I would have never done that if it wasn't for Derek."

Artemis sighed. "I don't get it, Isaac. Your so sweet to me when we're alone but when Derek or the rest of his pack are with you you act like a bad guy."

"I know but what do you want me to do? Derek is my alpha and I need to follow his orders."

"Just because he's your alpha doesn't mean you need to act like an ass and you definitely didn't need to attack Scott." Artemis snapped as she stood up.

"Artemis?" Alec asked again when he notice the blonde looking out the car window and towards the road.

All he got back was a, "Yeah?"

Alec rolled his eyes when he remembered about earlier. She's thinking about her ex again. What was so special about her ex to make her have flashbacks of him twice now. The thought couldn't leave his mind so before he could stop himself he asked, "What's so special about him anyway?"

"Excuse me?"

Alec didn't hold back this time. "This is the second time you've had flashbacks about your ex. What's so special about him."

"Why do you care? You don't know anything about him or our relationship." Artemis snapped.

Alec was getting annoyed with Artemis always defining him. Why would she after what he put her through. "Oh come on, he's not perfect. I can see he broke your heart so why would you be thinking about him?!" The Lightwood boy didn't realize he hit a bad subject until he saw the look on Artemis's face.

She looked so heartbroken. Her eyes were glossy, and her mouth was open slightly as if she was about to let out a sob. But that wasn't compared to how she felt on the inside. On the inside her whole world was crumbling, again.

Artemis was about to reply but all that was heard was a sob that escaped her lips.

"I'm sorry..." Alec paused. "I didn't mean to upset you."

But he did and there wasn't anything he could do to take it back. For he had opened up a wound that had never really heald.
