The silence was deafening in Zak's kitchen as I stared back at the folder, an image of the orphange with its title in thick bold letters, underlined to make it stand out from the page.
This wasn't a simple topic, this was a sore subject. Even after all these years.
Twin bridges was a place I would rather forget... Forever.
"Please... Please say something." Zak spoke reaching for my hand, I withdrew it from the work surface and placed my hands on my lap.
"Robyn..." He whispered.
"Is this why you invited me over for dinner? To sweeten me up before you throw me in the deep?" I asked biting the skin on my lip through anxiety.
"No. No this isn't why I invited you around... At all." He protested.
The place was rotten, even the paper in which its photo was printed was rotten. Everything about that place was rotten to it's core.
I looked up to Zak whose brows were pulled slightly "Why can't I believe that?"
He wet his lips before swallowing hard "I understa-"
"You don't understand shit!" I snapped before taking my bottom lip between my teeth hard.
This was not the time, place or person to be having a go at. I wasn't angry at him, nor was I angry at Jeff.
"I wanted to tell you."
"But you didn't... You've yet again withheld something big from me. What else is there huh? Gonna pull out some sick stunt and hit a triple?" I asked him.
"You're mad at me, I get that."
"Mad? I'm fuming. I am beyond mad Zak. In fact. I don't even know why I'm still in your house." I replied standing up instantly. I gave the pack one last look before the knot in my stomach appeared. A knot that had been absent for many years.
"Robyn please. Sit down, let's talk about this." He spoke as I moved out from the chair and headed to the door.
"I'm not talking about that place! I won't pull that up!" I shouted grabbing my bag from the couch.
"Then let's scream. Let's shout, argue, cry, fight! But do not walk away from this! Stop running away!" He snapped back making me stop.
"Run away? You think I am running away? Zak I'm done running. I am past that..." I pointed to the kitchen. "I'm done with it okay? I've dealt with it."
"I don't think you have." He countered.
I tore my eyes away from him and looked down at Gracie's face, her eyes looked between us expectingly but her ears were moved back slightly almost knowing connection had changed between myself and Zak.
"I'm not arguing with you in front of Gracie..."
"Fine. I'll put her out-"
"No you won't. You will leave this alone.. I'm going home."
Turning on my heels, I had his hand seize my bicep pulling me around again "Stop running."
I snatched my arm away angrily and took a quick look at Gracie before glaring at Zak "You are a fine one to talk... How many skeletons do you have in your closet Zak? What's happening between you and Harmony? Hmm?"
"It doesn't matter." He grunted.
"I think it does. See if you wanna talk about me. Then I wanna talk about you."
He scoffed "This isn't about me or my love life which you seem to be interested in a hell of a lot. What's the matter pudding? Isn't anyone wanting dessert?"
