As the day progressed, Summer began realizing that detention was not helping her at all. It took place after school, right after school. She was not going to have any time to meet Ava. The school had notified her parents and her dad was going to pick her up from her detention. She sighed in frustration and bit her apple. She sat alone at lunch, with a book open in front of her. The words weren't keeping her mind off of her thoughts as well as normal, and her eyes kept drifting. She slammed it closed and threw her apple into the nearest garbage bin.
"Nice shot." Austin said and sat down beside her. "Frustrated about detention?"
"Yes! My parents are going to pick me up and my chance to escape gone!"
"Not necessarily. Right after school, we're leaving. We normally have five minutes to get stuff together before detention and that's when we'll go."
"But that won't give us enough time to meet with Ava!"
"Ava?"
"Did I say that out loud?"
"Yes. Who is Ava?"
"An old friend who I was supposed to see after school."
"You're an idiot."
She shoved him. "No I'm not! I haven't seen her since sixth grade! She was my only friend!"
"I'm sorry Summer, but you can't meet with her."
"But"
"No Summer."
She huffed and stood up but Austin grabbed her elbow.
"Summer, you cannot get hurt. I will not let you. Please just listen to me."
Her face softened, slightly. She fixed her glasses, grabbed her book, and walked away.
¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤The rest of the school day was a blur. Summer kept her mind off of her situation for the most part and Austin continued to relish his last day as a popular. As soon as the last bell rang Austin and Summer grabbed their stuff and ran to Austin's pickup. He pulled out and drove as quickly as possible away from the school. He noticed Summer turn back to the school with a melancholy look across her face. He rubbed her shoulder and she forced a smile.
"Thank you for listening to me." He finally said.
"Ya."
"I just want you to be safe."
"We won't be safe until we're out of the city limits."
He raised an eyebrow at her, but continued to drive. "Yeah, I'll be more relieved once we get out of the city too."
Almost on cue, they passed a sign that told them that they were in the next city. Austin pulled over on to the side of the freeway and slid out of his truck. He walked to Summer's side and let her out.
"Do you have a phone" he asked.
She nodded and pulled it out. Austin led the way into the trees and when they got to a clear- ish spot he dug a small hole.
"Let me see your phone." He said. She reluctantly handed it over. Austin pulled off the back and removed the battery. He did the same with his phone and then snapped the batteries in half. After burying them he threw the empty phones into the woods. They made their way back up the hill and into the truck.
"Where are we going now?" Summer asked.
"I know someone who can help us."¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
