Flashback to sixth grade year:
"Come on Ava, you're gonna make us late to the first day of school!" An anxious Summer called through her best friends bedroom door.
"Gimme a sec!" Ava yelled back.
Summer was practically jumping up and down from excitement. It was the first day of her sixth grade year, the year that she would finally rule the school. As a sixth grader, she, as well as the other sixth graders, was a "big man on campus".
Ava pushed the door open and smiled.
Even though they were best friends, they didn't have much in common.
Ava wore jeggings and a dark grey sweater while Summer, not willing to give up her summer clothes, was dressed in a white t-shirt and jean shorts.
Ava's long blonde hair hung down on her back and was stick straight, like normal.
Summer had pulled her loose curls into a high pony tail and grinned at Ava.
"Ready?" Summer asked
"I suppose"
They both puked into Ava's minivan and buckled. The ride there was normal, the same road, houses, and neighbors.
"Bye Mrs Hartley!" Summer called over her shoulder as they climbed the stairs to school.
They ran to the class they would spend their last elementary year in and searched for the desks with their names on them.
Summer was in the middle of the room, which she didn't mind. Ava's was in the back left corner, so they could communicate pretty easily.
The day passed by moderately quick and, since their teacher was in a good mood, they had an extra recess.
Summer and Ava sat together on some grass and talked.
"Heads!" A boy yelled. Summer turned just in time to receive a basketball to the face. Her glasses broke and she winced as the metal scratched her nose.
"I'm so sorry, Summer" the boy apologized as he retrieved his basketball.
She squinted at him "It's fine, Ethan."
"Umm, I'm Devan."
She shook her head "I'm sorry, my vision is really horrible. I should go let Mrs Byer know."
Ava helped her over to the teacher. "I told you we probably shouldn't sit by the basketball players."
"Oh shut it Ava."
Their teacher examined summer and her scratch. "Do you need to go to the health room?"
"No, I'm fine. Those glasses were super old anyway."
"Okay, well, be careful and Miss Hartley, stay close to your friend."
Ava led them to a bench far away from the basketball players.
"Uh Ava, does everyone have those little white words over their heads?" Summer asked
Ava laughed "little white words? No Summer, you're probably just seeing things a little messed up without those glasses."
"Are you sure? They kinda look like they're being written by the blurs."
"I'm positive Sum."
Summer shrugged and looked at the top of Ava's head. The words said stuff like
I'm hungry, what'll I eat when I get home?
Summer is acting weird
Devans kinda cute
"You think Devan's cute?"
Ava turned red "What? No. I mean, well. How did you know?"
"The little words said so."
"You're crazy Sum."
"No! I'm serious! That's what the words say!"
"There's no words."
"Yes there is!"
"No"
"Yes!"
"No!"
Summer rolled her eyes and turned away.
Across the field, the only girl Summer had ever hated was turning cartwheels with her friends.
They never got along and Sierra teased Summer about her glasses.
The words over her head were what most twelve year olds thought about. Guys, clothes, food, and friends.
On instinct, Summer began to rearrange the letters. She didn't know why, she just felt like she could. She got through one word before a migraine hit her.
Her hands flung to her temples and she gritted her teeth in pain.
"Whats wrong?" Ava asked.
"I dunno, bad-" she winced "bad headache." Tears sprung to her eyes and the headache grew worse every passing second. Summer began stumbling to the garbage and threw up. Everyone ran over to her but before she passed out, she saw that the word she had formed over Sierra's head was still there.¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
After the migrane, Summer worked even harder to learn to rearrange the letters and frequently "forgot" her glasses.
She grew better everyday and soon she could get people to do little trucks and once she convinced her teacher to cancel a quiz.
The last day she ever used her gift was a Thursday.
Sierra had come over to her and Ava and wasn't exactly being nice.
"Forget your glasses again, stupid?" She taunted.
Summer glared at her "Forget your makeup again?"
"Ha! I don't even wear makeup, Akkeson."
"Oh yeah, you should try it. It might make you look decent."
"Like you have any room to talk."
She glanced at Ava "well Summer, you do look better then, what's your name again?"
Ava hid her head "Ava"
"Of course, Ava. But then again, everyone looks good compared to her."
"Get lost Sierra" Summer growled
"Did I mention? I heard Devan say you looked like a greasy rat."
Ava pulled her hair in front of her face and sniffed.
"Are you seriously crying? What a baby!"
Summer stood up and shoved Sierra "I said get lost."
"She can't even defend herself! How pathetic!"
Summer snapped and began to fill Sierra's head with thoughts.
As soon as Summer wrote it, Ava started sprinting towards the street.
"Stop Sierra!" Mrs Byer screamed.
"I can't" Sierra shrieked.
Summer followed her as she hopped the fence and ran into the street, into the path of a car. It slowed down, not enough to miss her, but enough to keep her alive.
Sierra crumpled into the street and wailed.
"Man up!" Summer tainted "It barely hit you!"
Mrs Byer glared at summer. "Can't you see she's hurt?"
Summer rolled her eyes "What a crybaby."
Mrs Byer crouched by Sierra "why? Don't you know better than to run into the street?"
"I- it wasn't me! I didn't want to!"
She raised a shaky finger and pointed at summer "she made me!"Back to normal time:
Summer turned to Austin "That's when I realized what a monster I'd become. I had convinced people to do stuff I wanted them to and hurt someone in the process. I forced people to do my bidding and felt no remorse, well, until I hurt Sierra."
"Wow summer." Austin groped for more to say, but his mind was stuck on the fact than Summer had hurt someone on purpose by forcing them to run into the road. All as an eleven year old.
Summer looked down "I never told anyone else before and I get that it's strange, I just needed to tell you."
Austin put his hand on her knee "It's not that I don't like you anymore, it's just really hard to see you hurting someone."
She smiled a little, "well, get used to it, cuz if we're going to win, I might have to hurt someone."¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
