It was two in the morning. Driving all night was going to get them back to Lafeyette asap, so that was the plan. Ava was driving now.
Summer hadn't slept yet, there was too much going on to sleep. The radio was playing softly and she hummed along.
"Sum, you might wanna sleep." Ava said.
Summer smiled "I don't think I could if i tried. Thanks for the concern, though."
"Really, Summer, at least try. It'll help you focus tomorrow."
"You haven't slept yet either."
"That's cuz I'm driving and sleeping might be dangerous."
Summer chuckled and examined the clear night sky. It was May, almost June. June first was in three days, and that was her birthday. She was gonna be sixteen.
The stars twinkled for a second before the truck's speed distorted them, and they were out of sight.
"Remeber sixth grade, Sum?" Ava wondered quietly.
"I try not to," Summer sighed.
"One mistake, Sum, one accident, that's all. The rest was amazing. Sixth grade was only three years ago for you."
"Ya, almost four actually."
"Good times, I wished it couldve lasted forever. We were legends!"
Summer skimmed the dashboard with her fingers, "It's ironic, now I'm the shiest girl in school, who is wanted by a group of control freaks called the Sway."
"Funny how fate works."
"Fate: that rhymes with hate, and I hate how fate has played out." She laughed "even in bad times, I make sick rhymes."
Ava rolled her eyes and laughed,
"It'll all turn out alright, Sum. Try to sleep, please?"
On cue, Summer yawned. "Okay, i guess I am kinda tired."
As she closed her eyes and drifted to sleep Ava reached over her and shook Austin awake.
"Wha, huh? Is it my turn to drive?" He mumbled.
"No," Ava whispered, "I have a question for you."
"Ask away, but I'm still slightly asleep, so my answers may not be completely accurate."
She hesitated before asking "Are you Agent Lyons?"
He jolted into a completely awake position. "What?"
"Are you Agent Lyons?"
"Well," he blinked a couple times, "yes, I mean I was, Agent Lyons, junior."
"You were? Aren't you still on task?"
"Task?"
"Bring Summer Akkesson to the Sway."
"No! I course not! I gave that up!"
"Really?"
"Yes really! Who are you to ask any way?"
"Agent Hartley."
"You're here for Summer? I thought you two were best friends."
"The Sway has helped me more than summer ever will."
"I can't believe you! Get out! I'm done with the sway!"
"But your father. Didn't you take up his position as a searcher after he was injured? Are you really going to disappoint him like this?"
"I did, but, he would understand!"
"He would?"
"Of cour- ye- kind of- maybe- no. No he would not. I am a disappointment. But I can't hurt Summer." Austin stated, slightly ashamed.
"But you can hurt your father?"
"Yes, no, I guess, i don't know, okay?"
"How is it so easy to betray your family? You don't have feelings for summer do you?"
He looked at summer, who was sleeping with surprising peace. She was very pretty, and nice, and funny, and smart, and, well, just plain amazing.
He shook his head, "no, I don't have feelings for her."
"Then why help? The Sway is going to win in the end, you know."
Ava was right and Austin knew it, four teens had no chance against some crazy adults. He had no choice, "Yes," he said flatly "I am Agent Lyons, and I am on task."

"Come on, Summer, we need food." Connor whined "can't we just stop for breakfast? Pleaseeeee?"
"Connor, my family is in danger, we don't have time for food."
He crossed his arms, "like you're going to be able to fight the seat on an empty stomach. It'll only take ten minutes."
"Fine, ten minutes only."
Austin put his hand on her leg "You're eating too, Summer."
She brushed his hand off "I don't want too, I feel sick to my stomach."
"It's nerves, a McDonald's breakfast sandwich will definitely help."
"I'd rather get some pancakes."
"Then get pancakes!"
"No duh, Sherlock." She mocked.
Austin smirked, "a nap definitely didn't make you any happier, grumpy-gills."
"Don't. Call. Me. That."
"Sorry, Madam frowns-a-lot."
"Seriously?"
"No better?"
"Nope."
"Okay then."
Ava pulled into McDonald's. "I'm going to bed, grab me a sandwich."
They nodded.
As summer hopped out of the truck, Austin shoved one of the matching beanies he bought earlier on her head and then placed one on his own.
"We're only an hour away, people may begin to recognize us. Keep your head down, okay?"
"Gotcha"
They shuffled inside and got into line. Connor asked them all what they wanted and ordered. After they got their food, they hit up the bathroom and were back in the truck in ten minutes.
"Told you" Connor smirked.
Ava was asleep and Connor volunteered to drive. They puked back in and pulled out.
Summer was in between the middle seat, which was where Austin say and shotgun, where ava fell asleep. She reached to turn on the radio, but Connor slapped her hand away.
"What the heck?" She asked
He grinned "Driver picks the music."
"But-"
"Shotgun shuts her cakehole."
She crinkled her nose at him as he flicked on a country station. Austin had sat there with a furrowed brow the whole time, fidgeting with his prepaid phone.
"Are you okay?" Summer asked "I'm sorry for snapping at you earlier, I guess I was hungry."
"You're fine" he smiled "I'm just thinking."
"Don't think"
"Why?"
"Remember? I'm supposed to be smart and scared, you're supposed to be brave and clear- headed."
"Oh yeah"
"Just don't think."
"It's kind of hard, in this circumstance."
She leaned against him "just listen to Connors terrible music, and don't think."
"Hey!" Connor objected but summer didn't care. She was tired and comfortable leaning against Austin.
Her mind was clear, for the moment.
