Summer Pulled her now straitened hair out of her face, and cleaned her glasses. She felt as though there was a brick in her stomach. She still wasn't sure why she had accepted the invitation to hang out with the populars. Her outfit wasn't as stylish as the clothes the populars wore, but it was the best she had. She pulled her red flannel shirt over her head and examined herself in the mirror. She was wearing her only pair of denim shorts and brown boots. She tried pulling the shorts down further. The shortest pants she wore came down to her knees, and she wore those for P.E. She jumped at the sound of the doorbell.
"I got it!" She yelled to her parents who were sitting in the other room. She opened the door and smiled awkwardly.
"Hey there" Austin said.
"Hi!" She replied, maybe a bit too quickly.
"Are you really going swimming in that?" He asked with a smirk.
"Excuse me?"
"We're going swimming, and I don't think that that's what people normally swim in."
"Oh, umm, sorry I didn't know," She stammered, "I-, I can go change "
" Well hurry up then."
She quickly ran up the stairs to her bed room and slammed open her drawer. She rummaged through her clothes, spilling things on the floor surrounding her bureau. After five minutes of searching she finally found her swimsuit. It had been a while since she had been swimming and she muttered silent prayers that the suit would still fit her as she pulled it on. She let out a sigh of relief and checked herself in the mirror. The swimsuit still looked new, and its navy blue and coral stripes were barely faded and it fit her well. She pulled a long white jacket over herself and slid on her flip flops.
"Finally, you're ready!" Austin exclaimed.
Summer blushed and looked at the ground.
"Come on then" He said and grabbed her hand and she felt her cheeks flush . He dragged her tto what she was guessing was his car. she hopped in the shotgun of his red truck.
"The rest are going to meet us there"
He put the keys in the ignition and started the engine. The truck wasn't the newest, but it wasn't a bad car. she leaned back in the seat and let out a breath. I'll be fine, it's okay, these people are probably really nice and they'll probably accept the fact that a random girl crashed their swim. She smiled at her sarcasm and looked at Austin who was humming to himself.
"What song is that?" She inquired.
"Oh," he said "It's a song my dad sung when he was in the military."
"Cool," She said
She sat there in the awkward silence. Finally she said the first thing that popped into her mind.
"Can I hear the tune again?"
She felt herself turning red and then realized that she probably looked like a retard. He turned and looked at her. He seemed like he was amused at her question, but at the same time wondering if he was going to answer her question.
He started humming, quieter at first. The tune sounded sadder and a little bit creepy. She felt goosebumps on her arms. He got a little louder towards the end, and as he finished he smiled at her.
"Did you like it?" he asked
"Ya, it was pretty, but it sounded kind of sad. What are the words?"
He turned and looked at her with a smile.
"I would tell you but we're here."
