They pulled up to a friendly looking house and Austin stopped his truck.
"Can we trust this person?" Summer asked sarcastically.
He laughed. "Glad to see you're feeling fine."
She smiled and let herself out. Summer followed closely behind Austin as they walked up to the house. He rang the doorbell and swayed on the balls of his feet as they waited. An equally friendly looking woman answered the door and squeaked in excitement.
"Austin! It's so good to see you!" She pulled him into a hug. Summer studied her. She had brown hair, but her roots were gray, her face had a few wrinkles; Summer guessed she was about fifty.
"It's good to see you also Mrs Paisley. Is Connor home?"
"No he's at work, but should be home any minute now. You can go wait in his room if you would like."
"Okay, I brought another friend." He stepped aside to let Mrs Paisley see Summer.
"Hello young lady." She began "I am Mrs Paisley. You are?"
"Summer Akkesson."
"Pleasure to meet you Miss Akkesson. Are you a friend of Connor's?"
Austin interrupted "no ma'am she isn't but I thought I'd introduce my best friends to each other."
"Oh, okay. Come on in then. Austin, you can lead the way to Connor's room and I'll make snacks."
"Thanks!"
She smiled and let the two teenagers inside.
As Summer followed Austin down some stairs she noticed the pictures of what she assumed was Connors family. There was a woman with dark brown hair, a man with black hair, and a small boy. After a few pictures the man disappeared.
"Is that Connors dad?" She asked Austin.
"Ya, him and Mrs Paisley split after Connors seventh birthday."
Austin led them down a hall into a room. When they opened the door a smell of paint overwhelmed them.
"He must have been painting this morning." Austin groaned and walked toward the window. After he threw it open, he sat on the bed. Summer surveyed the room. The walls were crowded with different paintings.
"He paints alot?" She asked.
"Ya, he has a lot of free time after work."
"What does he do for a living?"
"Flips burgers. He wanted to be a police officer, but he was rejected."
"Why?"
"He limps, he was born with a club foot and the surgery didn't do much."
"Oh" she said.
"Ya, it sucks, but he doesn't let it get him down. He's really good at cheering people up. That's part of the reason I always hung out over here."
"Cool," she said sitting down next to Austin. "What was your home life like."
"I'm so touched you feel like you can ask me." He joked. "My parents were away alot, I didn't like being home alone so i would come over here."
"Wow, when did you start working for the government?"
"My dad got injured when I was fifteen, and that's when I decided to join the team to find you."
"What made you want to help me?"
"I couldn't bring myself to hurt you. That's why I left early, so I didn't see you get hurt. After I saw you alive at school, my conscious got the best of me. I knew I had to help you."
She smiled.
They heard someone thumping down the stairs in uneven steps. The door flung open and a smiling teen walked in. "Austin!" He said.
"Connor!"
The tall boy smiled, his green eyes sparkling. His dark hair was spiked up a little in the front. His eyes shifted to Summer.
"You must be the other friend my mom told me about. I'm Connor."
"I'm Summer Akkesson."
"Pleasure!" He said, bowing dramatically. "Austin." He began, turning around "what's up? I never see you anymore."
"I'm- well- my job. It's gotten complicated."
"Oh," he said, his face turning solemn. He closed his door. "Does she know?"He asked pointing at Summer.
Austin nodded and moved over for Connor to sit between him and Summer. After he sat, Austin explained the story.
"Man, and this is the girl you've been searching for?" Connor asked
"Yeah. I just never told anybody that they were planning on hurting her." Austin said.
"I'm glad your conscious got the better of you." Connor said.
"Me too." Summer started "So he knows about your job? Who else does?"
"No one else. No one that I'm close to. All my friends were part of the set up."
"Did you destroy your tracks?" Connor asked.
"All but my pickup. I'm doing that tonight. Is there anyway we could crash here?"
Connor smiled "of course! Austin, you could stay in here. Summer can stay in our guest room."
"Is it okay with your mom?" Summer asked.
"Definitely, she loves Austin, and I'm sure she'll love you."
"What's our story?" Austin asked.
"Well, we can say that your having problems at home. And Summer, we can say that..."
He thought for a minute.
"I'm struggling to get along with my foster dad." She said.
They both looked at her.
"I've read it in a book before." She explained "We could say he was going for a drink, and he's scary when he comes back, so I needed somewhere to crash."
"Ya! That's actually pretty good." Connor said. "I'll go tell mom."
After he left, Austin turned back to Summer. "So do you get all of your ideas from books?"
"Most of them."
"Wow, that's almost genius."
Summer shrugged. "How are you going to get rid of your truck?"
"Well, I'll just take it to a hotel parking lot and leave it there. I guess after that I'll hit up a store and withdraw some cash. After that I'll destroy my cards. And yours, if you brought any."
"I didnt, just twenty dollars cash."
"Good, hopefully after all that, we'll formulate a plan and Connor will help us, probably."
Summer sight and rubbed her temples. This was a lot of stuff to process and it all seemed easier in books. Austin scooted closer. "It'll be alright, I promise. We'll get through this together." Summer smiled and half hugged him.
Connor came in frowning. "I'm really sorry guys, my mom said no."¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
