Elly's Point of View
There is only one time of day that I find exceptionally tolerable.
There is only one person who I can stand breathing down my neck at all hours of the night.
Both of which fit into my oddly-shaped, clump that I call a world.
Actually.
They are what my world revolves around.

"How would you feel if I jumped?" I ask her.
"Hmm.. I don't know. I think I'd be sad..but I'd be relieved."
I rasie my eyebrows at her.
She laughs. A soft, twinkling sound.
"What I mean is that I'd be sad, Elly. Like I'm not sure what I would do with my self."
She sighs.
"Carry on." I say. I would really like to know where this conversation is going.
"I guess.. Well, I guess I would feel--some what--I don't know. Relieved? If you were gone, it'd alleviate all of my fear for you, but I--" She stops.
"Lou..?"
"I guess you're gonna die any way. Right? So..."
"Okay, yeah. But that's not what I was asking."
It's her turn to raise her eyebrows now.
"What if it happened right now. If I just plunged into the cement. Just y'know dropped into my own shadowy abyss."
"Elly.."
"Answer the question."
"There'd be no way to fill the endless chasm my heart has turned into. It's so used to loving you. There'd be so much empty room. Spaces you were supposed to fill."
"That's not what I asked."
" I'm really wondering whether or not you can feel any human emotion."
I roll my eyes.
"Ah. So you do. Irritation is just the only emotion you can seem to produce." She says with a smirk.
"If you're gonna be mean, I'm leaving." I laugh.
We both know that's not true.
"What would you do, Louise? Really what would you do. Like ten seconds after."
"Well when you put it that way.."
"Uh huh.." I urge her
"Elly. Oh goodness, it's easy then."
"Okay sure! But you still didn't answer the question..."
I don't know if I wasn't expecting her answer, or if it was just the opposite.
Maybe I had known it all along.
From the first time I had seen her, I knew she was special.
I just hadn't realized that she would be the one to teach me a lesson I figured I would never learn.
That I was special too.
"I'd follow you, Eleanor. I'd tip-toe right over that edge into our shadowy abyss." She turns her head and looks at me. "I guess you could say...I'd follow you into the dark."

Maybe you could say that was the day I fell in love.
But I think, falling, was something I had been doing all along.
