"TRASH LIKE YOU SHOULD STAY OUT OF ANTEIKU!" A stunned Ken Kaneki received a hard punch to the jaw and flew back. Touka Kirishima was on top of him raining down half hearted punches in an instant.
"Why. WHY!!. Why... Why... Did you have to change....." She choked out the last word as she did her best to hold herself together.
"Touka.. I'm still Kaneki" He thought to himself also trying not to tear up. Before he could say anything, Touka scrambled to her feet and left without another word leaving Kaneki alone on the bridge to ponder his own thoughts.
Truthfully he did want to come back. More than anything in fact, but he still had unfinished business with the Commission of Counterghoul (CCG). He dreamed of a world of peace where ghouls and humans could get along and try to understand each other, but there were issues beyond ghouls living off humans.
Kaneki, the Eyepatch, is an infamous ghoul amongst the CCG and is a top priority for them to kill due to his insane ability. Although he didn't harm humans, he was perceived as a huge threat. At this point, miraculously, they have not been able to match up his real identity with the ghoul whom the CCG feared, the white hair certainly helped, but he knew he didn't want to risk losing everybody he cared for. If they put two and two together, he would never be able to return to Anteiku.
"I gotta get out" Kaneki thought "This needs to end.. not just for myself but for their sake.. for her sake.."
He calmed his rising anxiety.
"But I can't.... I can't put them in danger with my presence. I'm sorry Touka"
Kaneki had fallen in love with Touka, but was too scared to act on it. It all started with a simple crush around the time they worked together to help comfort Hinami and stop Kureo Mado and Koutarou Amon, the crush solidified when they teamed to stop Shuu Tsukiyama at the church. That crush finally turned to a fiery love when he picked her up off the ground when she was battling her brother, Ayato Kirishima, in the 11th ward. She had come to try and save him. The funny thing is, even with his new found strength and confidence he still couldn't imagine having an intimate conversation with her that didn't end with him lying on the ground begging for his life. He knew she was just overly protective and caring but it still frightened him nonetheless, but after seeing her reaction on the bridge he knew he was hurting her more than he was helping her.
Kaneki, despite putting that together, somehow failed to realise that this outburst was caused by her affection for him. It killed him to think he couldn't go back yet.
"I can't think about this now we have a big mission tonight" He headed back to his hideout, his expression grim hanging on to her words.
Touka ran, she didn't know where she was running, but eventually concluded her room at Anteiku would be a safe place. She didn't know how to feel; the emotions ran high as she felt a mix of anger and sadness. She didn't want to say those things and hit him like that in fact, she fought the urge to hug him but her hard shell behaviour took over.
She got back to her room trying to study for her finals, but kept rerunning the scene in her head "In the end I ended up beating him to a pulp and even said those awful things" She slammed her fists on her desk.

"Now he'll never come back" A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Wha? Why are you crying Touka get back to work" she thought as she shook her head and grabbed her pen.
At that moment, she heard her door open and quickly gained her composure wiping her tear away. It was Hinami Fueguchi.
"Touka Onee-Chan!" Hinami yelled as she tackled Touka.
"Hey!" Touka was happy to get a distraction as well as see Hinami. It's been awhile.
"What are you doing here Hina?"
"Kaneki Onii-Chan sent me back! He said it was getting too dangerous and wanted me back at Anteiku with you guys. I didn't want to leave him but he can be pretty stubborn haha"
Touka smiled at her cute laugh, he cared for her safety and she was still the same pleasant young girl as before.
"Well it's great to have you back Hinami"
At Banjou's Apartment
"You ready to go my sweet Kaneki?" Tsukiyama chirped as Kaneki shot him a death glare.
"Yeah"
"You feeling OK man?" A concerned Kazuichi Banjou asked. "You need to be focused on raiding the lab in the 2nd ward. We don't know if the CCG will be involved or no..."
"Lets go" Kaneki cut him off without looking at him or changing his solemn expression.
Banjou wasn't convinced, but didn't want to press it. Without another word they took off into the night.
/OK there's the prologue sorry for the forced exposition but we do need to set up some background and tie into the manga canon (and a smidgen anime c:) as much as possible before I start this story as I personally believe a true story based on existing characters needs to start from the canon and not from ground up (as it's not really their true character then in my opinion). It's all going be "AU", my non canon love story, from now on.
