Hesitantly, I stumbled down the stairs holding the fork still stuck in my braces. I heard the TV on, so assumed Sam was in the living room, and sure enough he was.
'Here goes nothing' I thought to myself.
I slowly edged into the room and coughed to get my brother's attention. He quickly looked up at me, a confused expression on his face.
"Billy?..." He was now stomping towards me. "What have you done? Let me see!" He came up close attempting to look at the damage.
I reluctantly moved my hands away so he could see the fork stuck in my braces and his face turned from confused, to concerned, to angry, and to surprised within seconds.
"Go lay down on the sofa Billy, I'm just going to grab my emergency tools!" Sam began scarcely, as he ran out of the room, only to return in a hurry, a few moments after. He then joined me, taking a seat cross legged on the sofa and placing my head within his lap, the rest of my body flat out covering the rest of the sofa. He then quickly pulled on a pair of latex gloves and took control of the fork I'd been holding at an angle where my gums didn't sting so bad. It was strange having Sam do dentistry at home while in his lounge wear of sweatpants and a hoodie rather than scrubs, smart clothes or a doctor's coat. He passed me his iPhone 6 (dentists get paid a lot) with the torch turned on and told me to hold it towards my mouth so he could see properly. I obeyed, feeling guilty for what I had accomplished.
"Not sure how you managed this Billy" he scolded, trying to edge the fork out of my braces whilst I winced harshly, "but it's well and truely stuck. I'm going to have to cut your wires!"
~Sam's POV~
From what it seemed, Billy had tried to pull his braces off, but only succeeded on two of his bottom incisors. The wire had come out on those two teeth and the tiny elastics to hold the wire in place were no where to be seen. He must have really tried hard to get them off, it's not an easy job! I attempted to edge the fork out but, but Billy just winced in pain with the fork digging into his gums. The fork he was using was stuck in the wire by force, and the only way to get it out was by cutting the wire around the fork.
From my emergency bag, I pulled out a thin, sharp pair of pliers to efficiently cut the wire. I noticed Billy's hand begin to shake when he spotted these, so I quickly rubbed his head to try and calm him down, then began getting to work. In an easy two cuts of the wire, the fork was free from Billy's mouth!
~Billy's POV~
As soon as the fork was out of my mouth, I sat up faster than a lightning bolt and gave my brother a tight squeeze.
"Thank you Sam" I murmured in embarrassment, yet as I was about to walk away he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back.
"We're not finished yet Billy, it's a hazard having open wires in your mouth, I need to do something about that. But without a doubt you'll have an appointment at my office tomorrow morning to sort out this damage. Now come lay back down please" he said, patting his lap.
Not saying a word, I laid back on the sofa and put my head back on Sam's lap, looking up at him and his perfect face, while he looked down on my ugly mug. He then passed me his phone again and I shined the light towards my mouth.
"Open up then" he snapped, making me jump. I obeyed and he began his work.
~Sams POV~
Billy opened his mouth for me and I started off by dabbing his sore gums with a gauze and some medication. He squeezed his eyes shut tight and winced at the stinging it caused and tried to close his mouth shut, but I managed to keep it lodged open with my fingers. Afterwards, I looked for a temporary solution for the problem at hand.
"There's not much I can do right now until we go to my office, so I'm sticking on some wax, which is a bit like putty, where the sharp edges are, just so it's safe for you Billy."
Billy attempts to respond with an 'okay' but fails miserably due to my hands being in his mouth.
"But first of all I recommend you go get a large drink because from what I know, you may not feel comfortable drinking with the wax in. It's just a thought."
I let Billy get up and he rushes off to the kitchen to down a glass of water. He then returns back and lays in the same position as before, without even being told.
I take out a strip of wax and begin moulding small pieces into tiny little balls. I notice Billy watching my every move, whilst he huffed and puffed grumpily in my lap.
"And open please" I urge. He complies and I begin sticking the putty to the ends of the cut wire, padding them down neatly.
"All finished" I inform him, pulling off my gloves and chucking them away. "Now i'm just going to put my tools away and then we need to talk. Stay here please."
~Billy's POV~
I sit up on the sofa then wait for Samuel to return. I knew I was about to be lectured and scolded, so I attempted to prepare myself for the harsh words. But to my surprise, Sam sat next to me and gave my a quick hug, which certainly was not expected!
"So Billy" he began, "why did you try and pull your braces off?"
"They were and still are just really hurting me" I sulked.
"You could have just asked for some medication you realise?" he countered.
"I know but I just feel embarrassed about my braces..."
"Don't feel embarrassed Billy, nearly every teenager has braces, and it's not your fault you're teeth aren't as straight as they could be."
"Well your teeth are straight" I brooded, poking Sam in the lips.
"And do you know why that is? I had braces" he delicately smiled.
"Can I see your teeth again Sam?" I asked, not knowing what to expect. He grinned at me flashing his pearly whites then closed his soft lips.
"They're so nice" I complimented.
"Thank you" he chuckled. "Anyway, we'll have to get to my office about 7:30 tomorrow to fix your braces as my first appointment is 8:30 and I need to get everything sorted. Then you'll have to walk yourself to school. Also, I won't be there when you get home after school, so you can either let yourself in or come chill at my office for a bit. The choice is completely yours."
Wow, Sam had never invited me round to his office after school before, I usually just waited at home for him if he was working late.
"Alright sounds good" I said cooly.
"Now how about we watch a film together" he smirked.
"If I get to pick!"
