I was sat at the table in the kitchen, completing some homework that had been mailed to me from school. I was expected to complete it ready for the next day, considering I had missed a day of school, off my own accord. I attempted to find an excuse, explaining to Sam that I was tired from working at the office all day, but Sam just argued that it was my own fault for getting excluded for the day. I couldn't argue back, as it was true. It was wrong of my to punch the locker... so I sat and completed my homework...
For... THREE... hours!!
Just as I finished the final mathematics equation, Sam walked into the room greeting me with a smug smile."It's 10 o'clock Billy. Have you almost finished your homework?" he asked.
"Yes Sam" I answered respectfully. "I'm now on the last question. This maths is very difficult."
Sam helped me with the last question, which he did with ease, then pulled out a chair and took a seat next to me.
"Billy" he smiled.
"Errr... yeah?" I answered, shoving my finished homework into my bag.
"I have a proposition for you" he said, leaning back and crossing his arms across his chest.
This could either go one way or the other...
"Right..." I replied.
"I've been thinking it's time I hire a new dentist at the office. Adam and I are always under so much pressure with the amount of patients that we have to see, and new patients keep trying to book appointments with us, but we just don't have the time. Therefore, someone new joining the team will be of great help to us. They can occupy the spare examination room, and everything will be perfect" he beamed.
"Okay, but what does this have to do with me?" I asked, worried for what Sam had in mind.
"Well, you see... I have four potential applicants that I need to interview. Yet, I don't want to just interview them, I want to see them in action. So, I'd like you to be the practice patient. They would simply just attach a wire onto your bottom brackets, then give your teeth a clean. So, what do you say?"
"I say... piss off" I scoffed, then got up and began to walk out of the room.
"Fifty pounds!" Sam shouted, catching the attention of my ears. I turned around and gave him an interested look. "I'll give you fifty pounds if you do this for me, Billy."
I thought about it for a few seconds. "One hundred and fifty" I countered.
Sam let a smirk leave the corner of his mouth, then laughed an approving chuckle, raising one eyebrow up at me.
"Okay, one hundred and fifty it is" he grinned half-heartedly, getting up and placing his hand out to shake mine. I raised my hand, yet withdrew it before I shook his hand.
"Wait... I need more information" I instructed.
"Okay, no problem" Sam replied. He cleared his throat, than began a more in depth explanation. "There are four applicants that I'll be reviewing. Two of them will be assessed in the morning, and the other two in the afternoon. This will take place on Wednesday."
"So I'll get the day off school?" I said, overjoyed.
"Yes Billy, I'll give you the day off school" Sam replied calmly.
I smiled widely, then continued to listen to Sam's explanation.
"Firstly, you will need to take a seat in the waiting room, and wait for the applicant to call you through. That's test number one."
"A test for what?" I questioned.
"The way they call a patient through to the examination room can show a lot. It can portray confidence, kindness, or even smugness. They need to ensure that the patient feels comfortable right from the start. So once they call you in, you'll take a seat in the chair and they'll begin their work."
